American Axle strike hobbling GM

March 07, 2008 17:13PM

"An 11-day strike at Detroit-based American American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. will effect 29 General Motors Corp. plants representing nearly half the automaker's 80,476 workers by Monday.
GM said late this afternoon that 12 of those plants have been temporarily shut due to a lack of parts from American Axle. The remaining 17 plants will either face full or partial shutdowns starting Monday. Most of those plants are either stamping or powertrain plants.
Ten of the GM plants impacted by the American Axle strike are located in Michigan. Not a good time in the state economically for that to happen."

It seems pretty short sited to strike and idle a company that is losing money.

Especially when they have more days inventory sitting than you want to be out walking the picket line.

Oh, one of the prior posts talked about why companies leave the usa. Taxes in a word. Countries like Singapore will build a factory, pay for worker training and give you a pass on paying taxes for up to 10 years.

Think about it.

I just finished "The Fair Tax" book by Neil Boortz. I think it's time for a change - and I don't mean for that Irish guy from Illinoise. (O'Bama)

A perfect example of "grab the gold" no matter who gets hurt. They are on strike for more than the fair pay they already get, yet their strike will affect 40,000 of their union brothers at other plants and cause the worlds largest automaker to shut down.

You go girl! ;)

John,
for 15 years I provide "field services" to asset managers for forclosed homes.
15 years ago I was a "hick" with a pick up truck, cleaning out houses for asset managers. I never turned ANYTHING down, learned all I could about tech and running an office. I learned EVERY aspect of home building and rehabbing, I memorized FHA guidelines, I learned what home inspectors will and will not pick up.
I now proccess and manage the properties and over see all the physical work. My "word" is My #1 asset. When I tell a bank their property needs 12K to sell FHA, My subs will get it on the market for 8K period, Did I "eat" allot of mistakes over the years ? Yea, but those are now loyal customers.

Never sell Your reputation, it is either priceless or worth nothing.

Since the union employees don't like their employment terms and conditions, maybe they should pool their resources and offer a buy-out. Then they all can be the CEOS and pay themselves whatever they want

Large employee owned company?? This has been done before. It is called Delta Airlines. They are drowning and refusing the lifeline support of another airlines offer to merge to survive.

Michigan has basically put out the sign "closed for business" at all points of entry. I won't even get started on how screwed up our government is at both state and city levels. (Thank g*d I live in a rural township where everything is basically functional.)

I expect the American Axle strike will be about as good as Delphi's strike. And striking when your company supplies a part of a product that's selling slowly and getting slower (trucks and SUVs) to companies that have massive unsold inventory.... the timing could not be dumber. GM and Chrysler won't be hurt much if they sell out their truck inventory and even went a few months with no trucks to sell. The demand would be back when supplies returned, assuming they hadn't sourced their axles from China or India in the meantime, which they probably would have.

I'm always amazed at the disparity between union bosses and the workers they supposedly represent. Seems like a lot of quotes over the years where workers said they wanted to work but the union told them to strike, so that's why they were picketing.

Maybe this is how they did it:

Records: Southwest Airlines flew 'unsafe' planes - CNN.com

Southwestern has released a letter with their side of the story. They are saying that the mistake was part of an overlapping inspection that was missed. According to the letter they were the ones that realized they were not meeting the requirement and notified the FFA. I dont know whether that is true or not but that is what they are saying.
