Same as Chris, about 7 years.

I know I'm speaking a different vehicle but my 94 Olds 88 lasted until 2013 before brake lines rusted out ,that is close to 20 years ,I know someone will say my salt is less corrosive
Back on topic of original post there are many factors ,purchasers are paid to keep the cost of production down, these were cheap cars for a reason .How many people don't have the driving skill to pop it in neutral and restart an engine when it dies unexpectedly rather than just panic and crash.

To blame this on having too many keys on hour key ring is typical gm bull<**#. I could probably go put 30# 's of keys on my tacomas ignition and i guarantee it wont shut down lol!

Is this any worse than Toyota blaming runaway acceleration on non-OEM floor mats?

Toyota was correct on the extra floor mats causing the runaway issue. The mat would wedge the pedal to the floor. The floor of my 2007 Tundra has a cutout under the pedal. The extra mat(s) would fill the gap. To stop the noise, Toyota replaced the pedal with one that is so high in the air you can't feather it.

If you ever see a Tundra 'Jump' from a stop, its a driver inexperienced with the truck.

FWIW: my 1996 Explorer v8 has the same problem, too many mats will wedge the pedal down. Never a peep out of the public. Or the stupid press.

My '91 Chevy 4x4 never had a line replaced in the 11 years I owned it. My '97 never had a line replaced in the 10 years I owned it..Both had around 200k on them when I traded them.

My '04 had no line issues when I traded it in late 2010.

I am in the heart of salt country, PennDot dumps it everywhere in the winter. I've seen a few, and I mean a few, occrurrances of line rot below the drivers door on some early '00's GM trucks but the vast majority of people I know have not had any issues at all. Could have been a supplier issue for certain runs, who knows but it wasn't even close to every truck.

I owned a 2006 Saturn Ion and had the ignition shut off. My wife was driving the car and had a wad of keys on the key ring. I told her to get rid of the unused keys and never had the problem again.

In my opinion, GM should have increased the detent force and changed the part number as soon as they new of the issue. Standard configuration management says the if you change the function of the part the part number changes.

I also think that it is misleading to say the fix would only cost $0.56. For the new parts, yes. However, to do a retrofit would be much more expensive. I'm sure that was the decision GM was faced with.

The issue we all have to come to grip with is how much burden to we want to put on developers of products and how much are we willing to pay for it. We are stifling innovation because lawyers are making us risk adverse.

I also own a Toyota Prius and just received my check for the settlement. No problem was ever found, but to protect their reputation they had to buy off the lawyers and owners. Not a very good system.

It won't shut off but the frame will rot through leaving you truckless beside the salt mine. Seen it many times.

Fred, Toyota... no better than any engineered POS

The problem with the Toyota frames was that they hired DANA corp to build them. DANA screwed up and didn't build them to Toyota's spec. The funny thing is that there are just as many other brand trucks that are just as bad, or even worse than the Toyota frames.

your right alex but toyota is held to such high standards and stepped up to the plate so to speak

As for the extra keys on the key ring, other brands have to deal with the same issue and yet didn't have this problem.

What I want to know is how can the company go through a bankruptcy knowing they have an issue and from what it sounds like our government knew as well without telling the judge about it. It's a liability that had to be disclosed but wasn't. If any one of us lied to a judge we would be thrown in jail yet this is getting no attention. If I was one of the stock holders that got screwed I would sue.

I guess to avoid ownership responsibility auto makers could spend millions to R+D a steering column so the key chain hung straight down when in run position, then people would complain that they won't buy that @#$% car because it is too hard to put in lock position and remove the key.

I just saw a 2007+ Chevy with rust over the fenders. Not a good sign.
