And I'm thrilled with my "POS", a slow going, Dodge 3500 C&C. Maybe someday we won't get to have a personal choice in what to buy & drive, until then...................

4.56 gears! Dream on! You'll never see those in a light duty truck again. The 4.10s are starting to disappear now, and I suspect that the Ford 4.30 will follow.

Most of the time higher rear ratios are needed for trucks with bad torque curves....hint....hint. ;) GM pulls great with 3.73's and yes, I oughta know. Ford's still big on the 4.10s.

BTW: 2 major components GM built the Humvee are the IFS suspension and transmission. :p
What are Ford's major contributions to military turcks? <crickets chirping>

I also only do the mild off roading on muddy jobsites, snow plowing, etc. so SFA is pretty useless to me. I did just see an EXCELON energy GMC3500 crewcab 4x4 IFS do an awesome job climbing some of the nastiest terrain under power lines I've ever seen next to our new jobsite. :)

It is all relative.

As much as I will defend a straight axle, Jeeps are the best overall off-roaders, the Cummins rules...

The trucks of the last 10 years are so close in abilities that it is hard to go wrong with any one of them. The trucks of the last 5 years of that, are even closer.

Nothing discussed here, even the stuff of my humble opinion, is little details, that at the end of the day would not affect the use by 95% of people out there. And, for that other 5%, there are easily available aftermarket options. Lockers for example; the aftermarket is ripe with lockers. That are better than any of the factory offerings.

FWIW, the best truck is mine. My '01 is a little older now, but paid for and does everything I could ask. :D

Biggest issue I have with a IFS on a HD truck is putting a Snow Plow on it. Most guys around here run Fords and Dodges because the GM will not handle a 9' Boss V plow or similar. There are kits to fix the front ends of GM trucks for plows but that ruins the ride. You can run without a fix kit but it will eat tires.

As for the Ford the 03 you drove had the old leaf spring front end. The 05 and later have a Coil Over and it rides much better and has 18 deg more steering besting any manufacture in maneuvering.

Chris

You gotta come up with some new material.
Took me 1 minute to find a pic of a 2500 with a Fisher extreme 9'6" plow.

Oh, don't go there. The best military rigs and influenced, were the Willy's MB, and the Dodge Power Wagon. They set the bar for those to come :D :D :D

Interesting enough. Ford contract built Jeeps way back when, when Willy's had no way to keep up WWII war production(as did many companies). When I was a kid, our first "Jeep" was a Ford GPW. The give-away was the grill.

My Uncle has a 6x Chevy, I think '42. They were building right alongside Dodge. Lots of those two mixed up in the 6-by's.

Once again,,,,,ummmm Ford??? Or don't they play when the going gets rough.....;)
