Which one do you fly? That would be awesome to have a nice conversation with one of them. I would love to sit down with Alan Mulally. He seems like a generally great person.

I've heard that AFM is much more difficult to implement on an OHC engine vs. an OHV engine too.

Honda's system is very simple. Works just like VTEC.

Diesels accell at economy under load.

2013 Light-Duty Challenge: Mileage Drive - PickupTrucks.com Special Reports

The EcoBoost only bested the Ram in PUTC's recent 1/2 ton loaded fuel economy test.

A few things to keep in mind:

1) The Ford EcoBoost is the oldest of the big 3. Just wait for the new EB next year
2) The EcoBoost is rated for the most torque, so it has the ability to tow more. Compare the vehicles with like towing numbers
3) The EcoBoost beat all but the GMC empty.

EcoBoost is about the fuel economy empty, but the ability to tow heavy when you need it.

Look at the acceleration numbers loaded, unloaded and towing. Yes the GM gets the best unloaded mileage but look at how poor it performs in acceleration. The 8-speed really helped the ram this year.

It would be nice to see the 6.2 compared to the others. All the other trucks have their top towing power train.

I don't know about that. Ford has a 6.2 so should they have used that? In some ways the 5.3 is comparable to the Ecoboost and in other ways it is comparable to the 5.0. I guess they really need to test the Ford 5.0, 6.2 and Ecoboost and the Chevy 5.3 and 6.2 to see how the different engine perform.

I mentioned that earlier. My bet is the 6.2 will come out on top in acceleration but somewhere between the ram and the Toyota on mileage. I personally think the ecoboost still has the best balance of both.

Do a little tuning on the Eocboost and it be faster.

I am happy with it the way it is. I know it is easy to get a lot more out if it but don't want to push the envelope and hurt longevity.

I am not at liberty to say.

I will say we had a 20 minute conversation on AFM a why it was not going to be used at this time. Premature ware and oil consumption were the two main factors.

Ford felt gains equal or better could be made in other areas.

He did say Honda was the closest to perfecting it with small displacement engines and Ford would reconsider if advancements could be made to address issues associated with AFM.

I figured as much, but hey, had to ask! :)

It will be exciting to see the new technology coming down the pipeline in the next 10-20 years. New CAFE ratings are going to force technological improvements. Unfortunately, that means costs are going to be going up.

My 08 Impala has AFM and it works great for me (zero oil consumption at 135K). MPG is about 3-5 better when engaged. I think the problems happen when the "dead holes" cool down after extended periods of AFM use. Computer in my car won't let AFM run for more than 10 minutes at a time.
