Lack of a one time click to back up a page does bother me much more than anything in gmail.

The most annoying thing with the new UI - I use the chat to talk to my friends overseas. It used to be visible, but now, because they keep adding things like circles and such to the left menu - things I really don't care about - and the list of the people online is out of the screen.

Also in the transfer I lost my labels, I used them extensively to keep my mail somewhat sorted.

Years and years ago old Navigator offered an option t customize your home page, it would not be hard to offer that with a mail too.

Just saying - and yes, I am turning into grumpy old man

Since I've never used gmail, I asked a couple of people I know who use it what they think of the "upgrades". First, a lady about my age:

think age may play in a part of it...I hate it too....and that's
just half it it...I really don't want to learn anymore about it or
anything...lol

And then my daughter:

It's fine...just irritating to have to learn something new. You know everyone complains with change...just a fact. I don't like the look and feel at all right now, but I'm sure in a year from now I'd hate to see it go back because I'll love it. All the funtionality is still 100% there, plus some enhancements once you take the time to look around a bit...of course, after a hard day at work, cooking dinner, doing laundry, etc. I don't care to spend much time trying to figure something else out so I suppose I'll learn more about it in the next few weeks...until then, I'll survive...LOL!

Sounds about right to me.;) Almost every time there's an "upgrade" to Windows, Quicken, etc. I find that I like the older version better. A function of age? Quite likely.

Yes it is a function of age: we are all subconsciously aware that one day our version of the world will be obsolete and we will be replaced by Reality 2.0.

Bird...Let me give you an example....On our farm we have a tenant house in the front of a property adjacent to the farm...I just had a new tenant call me and say that he noticed on Google earth that I had a lake at the back of my farm and could he fish in the lake...Now we have had Several tenants in that house over the years..the last was there for 16 yrs. and he never knew we had a lake...this tenant , thanks to Google now knows, I told him No...that I had a project with my grand daughter involving the lake and it was not possible ...but do you think he might be slipping back there and fishing...? I don't live there ..so I have no way of knowing..but I did not give Google permission to take areal views of my farm and put them out for all poachers and potential trespassers to see
How is your tenant looking that up in Google Maps different from him picking up a topo map and seeing that you have a lake back there?
that is my only point..as far as our critical infrastructure the government should be able to pass a law making it illegal for Google or anyone else to publish on the internet areal views of our military installations and vital infrastructure...Just me....and yes it bothers me. :)
Google maps et al are blurred in many places that are considered terrorist targets, see: Satellite map images with missing or unclear data - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and User:Rjecina/List of places blurred out on Google Maps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aaron....Topo maps have been available at Georgia outdoors and other sporting goods outlets for many years and I have never had a tenant ask me about my lake that no one can see...The last time I had a topo in my hand was in the Army...the average person does not know about Topo maps nor do they know how to read them...

With Google earth...you just find a computer and click ...click and you are looking all over your neighbors, bosses or enemies property...If you are a poacher it is a perfect tool...same if you are a burglar or a thief...and I believe it to be a violation of privacy...Think of the farmers that have equipment barns back on their property...so now thieves that would have never known they were there simply look on Google earth and plan their theft...

It is the same with Yahoo.

My main email address is with Hotmail, and it has been the same for as long as I can remember, but my secondary email address is with Yahoo, and about a few months ago it advertised a Beta version, but you could always get back to the Classic one by clicking "Take me to Classic" (or something of that meaning - my memory ain't the best!) and it would go back to the good old version, but after a couple of weeks of going back to Classic, it said I had to upgrade to the new version, and the link to go back to Yahoo Classic was gone...

Now, another one is YouTube. I had just gotten used to (and actually started to like) the previous layout we had for a long time, and now they've changed it to another version that I simply hate!

The uploads are displayed separately, and not clumped together with the uploaders other recent uploads, as it was before.

For a couple of days you could get back to the original by typing "/home" after the URL, but now YouTube have redirected that to the new version too...

I hate change :(

Sorry if I hijacked your thread a bit, but I just like to say what I feel!

Dennis, OK that's all fine...but what about my Lake that I care so much about ? I have never had a tenant or anyone else suspect I had a lake and wander onto our property..but Google earth just makes it too easy..and is an evasion of my privacy and right to quiet enjoyment of the property...
What do you want done about it? The raw data is available in various forms (satellite images, town/county/city overflights to check for new buildings, people hanging out of airplanes, "services" who will sell you a blown up picture of your property for $50, etc), if someone wants it, they can get it.

If you dont want it to show up, write Google, Bing, Mapquest et al and request that they blur your property on their maps. Be aware though that if you do that, you may get more people looking at your property trying to see why it has been blurred.

From a random article on the subject:
Jason Shah of mobile data experts Mediafly says opting out of Google Maps information that you think is too personal is about all you can do to protect yourself from this new threat.

"All you need to do is find yourself, find your property on Google Maps or Google Street View, at the bottom there is a 'report a problem link,' and you can report yourself out," said Shah. "Over time. your image and your property will disappear from Google Maps."

Aaron.... I just want you to realize that my average tenant is not going to pay $50 for an areal photo of my property and poachers will not do that either but Google makes it real easy for trespassers and poachers...now at least give me that or you win..and I will go away and keep it to myself. The govt. loves regulations so much ..they should control Google and others like them when it comes to profiting off of spying on other folks property...

I agree that most people wont pay for such a service, but what exactly do you recommend that the government do to prevent Google, Bing, et al from doing this? How could they help in your case?
The images are commercially available and there is a proven demand for it, so if Google, Bing, etc get shut down, you will probably see a new company out of China or some Eastern European country (where there are no privacy regulations) making a similar site.

If you don't want to show up on their map, use their established procedures to opt out of it.

OK Aaron..My fault, I guess I failed to explain my situation well enough.,..sorry

I totally agree with brin's point, but there really isn't much that can be done about it. Most counties around here have their own GIS sites that anyone can access, with just a name or a street address. My county has arials of my place that are a year and a half old, preceeded by a list of them going back several years. It also makes it easier for the tax appraisers to spot un-permitted improvements.

Man, a simple email software update sure seems to have stimulated a lot of very paranoid thinking. Who'd have thought that the boogieman would benefit so much from GoogleEarth? Are poachers even smart enough to use online tools?

One thing I like about the new Gmail is that you don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom to delete something. At least I think it used to be that way! :):confused2:

You guys are annoyed about google email and facebook but this sites inability to back up a page at a time with one click doesn't bother you at all.

Download Firefox and get the ad blocker add-on. The problem was annoying enough to me that I wrote the site owner and that was their suggestion. It's unfortunate that you have to download another browser to prevent the multiple click problem on back paging.

Google tried to change me over but allowed me to revert. They had me fill out what I thought about the new format.
I cannot repeat what I said. :D
So far they have not moved me to the new look.
Later,
Dan

Bird, Since you brought up Google maps...I have a question...Do you not get concerned that the areal view offered by Google maps along with the street view makes it awful easy for criminals and terrorists to case their targets....that troubles me...What do you think ?

Bob, this morning, I found this while reading the news. I figured you'd like it:
