Jstpssng - interesting comment. Difficulty finding an open gas station at 2AM. Around here - ALL gas stations are open 24/7/365. They are not "manned" but if you have a credit card - they are open. You need the feature I have on both my BMW cycle & Power Wagon. It will locate the nearest gas station and show on the GPS feature the shortest route there. I have NEVER run out, but one time it was mighty close.

On second thought - is Maine one of the states that requires gas be dispensed by an attendant? WA is not.

We have those, the closest one is 50 miles away, also on the way to my mother's house. I've even seen a couple of 24 hour pumps which take cash. If I ever do get that call which the OP was talking about though, I don't want to worry about having enough fuel.
