Going from Ag tires to turf tires

/ Going from Ag tires to turf tires #11
First time post here so I apologize if I have got this in the wrong forum.
I've got a Ford 1200 with Ag tries. I want to move to turf tires since I do a lot of pasture work and the ag tires tear things up a bit.
I know the tire sizes are 8-16 for the rear and 6-12 for the front. What size tires do I need if I go to turf tires? It seems the turf tires are sized differently than ag tires.

Welcome to the forum.
If you were saying you want to get turf tires for a lawn, then I'd say "go for it". But for pasture, I'd suggest the Industrial tire. Better toughness (higher ply) and more rugged than the turf. But don't want to talk you out of your decision, so take it for what it is worth to you. :)
But as others say, doubt the same rims can be used in either switch. Check with your tire dealer for the skinny on this, and with your dealer if needed.

From an old brochure I have for the Ford 1120 and 1220:

fronts are 20 x 8.00-10 4 ply turf

rears are 29 x 12.00-15 4 ply turf

To me it looks like you need wider rims than what you have.

It only really MATTERS if you go into lag or use 4wd (or "front wheel assist") on dry hard pavement.

well if the point is to avoid tearing up turf then that isnt going to work well as the fronts will constantly over rotate or under rotate = scrub = hard on the turf and the tires.

Tearing up turf is FAR more about tight turns on wet grass than it is about tread pattern or 4WD (-:
Try it some time; turf tires, 2 WD, wet grass, min turning radius - the front wheels will either skid sideways or PLOW up a mini berm.

A "little" lead will not cause any significant turf damage when driving more or less straight.
If the "lawn" matters that much it probably shouldn't be driven on when 4 wd is needed anyway.
ANY lag is hard to handle in 4 WD, the back continually tends to come around one way and then the other.
The 3% to 5% lead tends to help keep the tractor straight.

I think auto tires may be a very good solution for tractors of this size, IF you can find rims that match both the tire AND the tractor's hubs - THAT might be the show stopper.

In conjunction with the suggestion for auto tires, the "original Austin mini" had 5.50x10 tires ("tyres" ?) back in '59 and early '60s, on 4 hole rims.
Not something you would likely find at a local tire store now though (-:

I mention the auto tires as an option only if the tractor is a 2 wd and to use with the current wheel sizes he has now, 16" and 12" tires are available and would mount right onto the existing wheels,;) and auto tires would not dig up the turf/grass as badly,

I found an ad while browsing CL and it looks as though that someone makes a narrow turf tire to fit your 8" wheels,.................. here is the ad,
BTW you never have stated if your tractor is 4 wd or 2 wd ?
