Based on most of the comments it must be the first Chevy they have ever seen with a fire!
I guess they are surprised because they are used to seeing Fords on fire like the motor homes with shorted cruise control, usually when they are parked, engine off and unattended.

Anyone remember a few years back when the pace care for one of the races was a Toyota Camry and it died on the track and they couldn't get it to restart and had to tow it off? That was truly a vehicle problem and not some auxiliary component that malfunctioned.
That doesn't sound like a Toyota. I would have expected the throttle to stick and set a new track record (for a pace car).
