Well, it depends on what kind of rut your in. Thats why I have Swampers on mine now. It's not something I would recomend for a commute though. Seems like the older I get the more I long for the smooth ride of a street tire, like on my Ranger, but it is fun to get that truck in the mud. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have to agree with the Inspector; I've gone through a lot of mud and muck with my trucks. I pulled my 12' long trailer loaded with the lumber to build my barn through the mud with no problem. I've had my old truck loaded with cord wood and have come out of some pretty nasty skid trails with it. In the snow, they are unstoppable. I have a 1500' gravel drive that is all up hill from the road. When I was building the house we got a snowstorm where my diff's and axles were dragging in the snow and I made it up the hill with only a little effort/wheel spin. As far as the mud goes, a little wheel spin is sometimes beneficial; it clears the lugs. Noisy, cupped tires: my experience is to rotate the tires every other oil change which in my case (synthetic oil) is 10,000 miles. The bigger tires are more likely to cup if not rotated.
I can honestly say I won't be buying another brand. Good luck!

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

We have a set of Wrangler somethings on my wife's F150. They give acceptable rain & snow performance, but nothing to write home about. Have owned 3 sets of Cooper Discoverers in my life, and all have given decent performance at a fair price. Again, nothing to crow about. Own an F250 SD Ford that came with General Ameritrac tires....on a hot day on dry asphalt they will provide some traction. They are wearing like iron, but handling and stopping about the same. Half my mileage is slideage. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So...after reading this thread twice, spending an hour on the Tire Rack site reading surveys (that is really helpful...I just hope it's real information), and pricing half a dozen places this morning I just ordered 4 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos for nearly $200/tire--includes tax, mount, balance, align, etc. and they are going to mount my half worn Generals on a set of new truck take-off rims and give them to me in case I decide to run them out in warm weather. I will be on the road later in December for a week with this truck, so I will report back. Once again, thanks to all for a really informative discussion.

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

I'll put in my vote for the BFGs T/As. I know a lot of people who run them, quite a few on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. They get amazing mileage too in my expreience.

Michelens AT tire is a high quality tire with excellent milage as well, but traction off-road isn't the best.

Inspector, I said they won't pull you out of a rut, mine have never stopped pulling, but if the rut gets to deep you have to back-up,I've done this many times.

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

For what its worth, went with the BF G AT tires. Spent $665 for all four, put on and balanced.

VERY HAPPY with them so far. Can climb up the pasture hill that I couldn't before (pretty steep), gas milage hasn't taken a nose dive, and good looking tires to boot.

Thanks for the input. Served me well.

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

OK---two weeks with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos, including last night's 5" snowfall. Here's the very early report. Three tanks of gas, mileage has dropped noticeably
(-1 to -1.5 mpg)...however, so have temps, warm up/clean windows time has increased with a wicked sleet fall last weekend, so it may not be the tires.
Very passable performance on last weekend's sleet. Awesome performance this morning on snow covered and slush filled roads. Simply awesome. Had a few places where I could test the limits with relative safety, and the traction--cornering, acceleration, and deceleration--was better than any I have ever known--by a wide margin--on a pickup (I've owned 5 pickups over 20 years). Oh yeah, current vehicle is 2002 F250 4x4 Supercab, 5.4L gas.

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

I just put some Revo A/T's on my wife's 4runner. The tires have gotten fantastic reviews by just about everybody so I'm hoping they work out well. The Dunlop GrandTrek tires that came on the 4runner where absolutely terrible for traction in the rain or snow.

So far the Revo's have good traction and they are quiet. I expected some noise from them but there isn't any.

I found them for $174 including mounting, balancing, etc. which is better than I had hoped for 265/65/17 tires.

Re: \"good\" all terrain truck tires?

I put on the Bridgestone Dueller Revos this summer. Very quite and the wet road performance is incredible. I put them to the test this past weekend off road in the winter. The performance was pretty dismal. If I was making my own track they performed well but if driving on hard pack snow or ruts performance was possibly the worst of any tire I have ever owned. When I first started out there was about 6" of rutty snow and I didn't think I was even going to get through it. They perform great off road in the summer. I lost 1 MPG overall with theese tires. Overall they are good tires but there is plenty of room for improvement. I think the best tires I've had on my D'max were the origional Firestone Steeltex. 70,000 miles and good all the way around.
