I had a crappy job that I stayed at 5 years too long. Finaly got to me one day and I quit on the spot. I took three months to find another job, but now I have a job I enjoy.

I agree in principle with giving a notice, but ive seen employers tell you to just leave now rather then work the two weeks. I wouldnt do anything stupid, but I wouldnt put up with too much crap for the tltwo weeks either.

I also am in construction, and the big thing is most of the competition know each other pretty well personally, so you dont wanto do anything rash, after all bosses cousin, or brother in law might be boss your interviewing with in another 6 mnths.

If I get flack or grilled on why I'm leaving, I'll just get up and leave. The funny thing is when I went in today the old guy jokingly asked how the interview went. I said what interview and acted normal all day. Maybe I should have said, "Great, I start the tuesday after the long weekend" and not said another word. Then just not show up on that tuesday.;) I gave my notice at the end of the day after the old guy left.

I like the branch manager and a couple of the guys there. The branch manager isn't really manager material for this type of business and doesn't really have any authority to do anything. He won't tell the arrogant old guy to smarten up and even though I've told him numerous times of problems I've had, he doesn't relay them to the owner. He goes to the main branch every morning to pick up stuff for the other location and talks to the owner. He say's I need to talk to the owner but the owner never comes to the other location and it's hard to call him when the troublemaker is right there. My sister owns a hair salon and if people are leaving to go to another salon, she just pays out the notice period. No sense having someone leaving telling the customers to go with them.

Worked at a place before I started driving , 10 years of my life , only missed 2 days to health and a 3rd day when father-in-law pasted away . Got tired of their crap one night , ( worked graveyard for 8+ of those 10 years ) , and in morning gave 5 Weeks notice . Reason being 5 weeks was on 6th week I could have everything lined up for next job . Well at end of my shift , ( 07:00 ) the next morning , here comes plant manager , production supervisor and Human Resource lady .

They Want to conduct a exit interview ??? WTF ever !! Says it will take 30 to 45 minutes . Mine took 3 minutes , They asked 1 question , I gave a 2 minute speech / reply that they did not want to hear and that was end of exit interview , With 1 exception .

They asked how I wanted to collect my " Paid 4 Weeks Vacation ? " .

" Well now , Let me think , How This , I'll Start my 4 weeks vacation first of next week and the remainder of my 5 weeks notice will be on vacation !! " .:p

There were 3 ticked off people standing in that office when I left that morning , none of them would say a word to me the rest of the week , yet every one else in that building treated me just like always including the owner of the business , ( He did not have much to do with day to day operations , He always stated that was what he hired them people for ) . I have always gave at least 1 week , usually 2 weeks notice , But 1 job I did walk out on was right after high school . Worked with my Brother-in-law at this mill . Away from there was a cool guy , at work , he was a D**K .

I Don't " Burn Bridges " but at the same time , I have zero tolerance for B.S.

Good Luck at your new Job . Does not matter what you do , were you live or what you wear , If your Happy , that is all that matters .

Yah, they say if you're not happy you should look for something better. I'd still like to win the lottery though.

2-weeks notice is considered a courtesy in the cube farm jobs I've had; but as others have noted that employers are not required to reciprocate when layoffs come around. Unfortunately that's the disadvantage of being an employee, you are employed (aka used) by the company to do a job, and if you are deemed no longer useful for whatever reason, you are history.

Good luck in your new endeavor Arc Weld.

My friend at work hit a scratchoff for 1million. Anything over 500g they wont give you lump some. After taxes and all the b/s he will get a check for 32g every january for the next 20 yrs. What a real boner killer that is. He got deflated real quick. They can even ruin a million dollars these days. :(

Twenty years ago, I worked for a construction company as a superintendent building an elementary school. I was having problems with the main office Project Manager not ordering materials in time even though I repeatedly told him when I needed them to stay on schedule.

They had a second project building a gym for the city. The City had an Iranian project engineer who thought a "little different" and was having problems with the superintendent on the gym job. The Project Engineer first demanded the Superintendent be removed and then his successor also removed.

The president of my company came to me and told me I was going there next to finish the job. I figure "Oh Sugar" there goes my job!

They replace me on the school job with an 18 year old kid (who just happened to be the General Superintendents son - more on that later).

I go to the Gym project and lo and behold, the Iranian PM and I get along fabulously. The project smooths out and starts moving along nicely.

About 3 or 4 months later the General Superintendent comes to me and says your fired because you screwed up the school project (yeah, the one his son is on that is now months behind schedule and looking at $1000 per day liquidated damages).

I tell my Iranian friend and he goes ballistic. He goes back to the city offices and talks to the City Engineer.

The next day he calls me and tells me that the City is going to hire me as a Special Inspector on the Gym job to oversee the contractor. :cool2:

BEST DANG JOB I EVER HAD!

I couldn't even count for the tens of thousands of dollars I COST that BASTARD! :licking:
