Congrats to the OP on your new job. Enjoy it!

My friend at work hit a scratchoff for 1million. Anything over 500g they wont give you lump some. After taxes and all the b/s he will get a check for 32g every january for the next 20 yrs. What a real boner killer that is. He got deflated real quick. They can even ruin a million dollars these days. :(

Seriously? Anyone that will scoff at a $32g check every January for 20 years has issues!

He wasnt scoffing, hes happy, but it sure as heck aint the million dollars they sugar coat. Hes divorced and paying child support and lives in a crap apartment and he thought this was gonna revive his miserable life. He gave his two kids 10g each with the first check and bought a nicer used car. First check Done! Oh well theres always next year. :(

Due to the fact that over half of lottery winners blow through it all and go bankrupt, it's better to have it spaced out. Personally, if I were in his shoes, I would have socked away most of that first check. If he is paying child support, that means his kids probably aren't out on their own and could have waited for their $$.

He told me he honestly wished he hit for 500g instead, he would have got taxed to death but a nice lump sum. He was hopeing to buy a house with it so he could live normal for a change. Poor guy works to hard to have nothing. Still a good deal tho, just not what you would think.

Interesting...I would think you could make a decent house payment with $32k a year. That's 3 times what my house payment is. Oh well, back to the topic...

I have an update on the job notice situation. I think it really tells a lot about someone when another employee is leaving. I gave my notice at the end of the day yesterday to the branch manager and told him I'd leave a notice letter in the delivery truck. He actually made the comment that I was tired of being the old guys monkey boy. I didn't say where I was going but had a couple different offers to choose from. One was welding sales and the other was a welding position. The welding position was BS but I didn't want to say where I was going.

Fast forward to this morning. I go in as usual and the old guy and the guy that referred me to the job are sitting there. The old guy asks me to sit down and then says "So you gave your notice?" I said yep and he says if the job's with a competitor you can go over and get your paperwork right away. I said I hadn't decided which job I was taking but since there was a good chance it was with a competitor, I left a short time later but in the mean time there was more discussion. The old guys starts in me, "let's not beat around the bush, you got offered a job at @@@." Then he said something that really shocked me, " I hear you're leaving because of me and that I won't get off my azz out of the chair?" "I push you too hard!" Then he says I did 9 orders yesterday, how is that pushing you too much. I asked him who said that and he said the owner called and said that was in my resignation letter. I said that's a total lie!!! Where'd he get that idea from? He say's your buddy(branch manager). I said all my resignation letter said is that I'm giving my notice and if I can be any help in the transition to let me know. We copied a template off the internet. I said @@@@, who referred me, knows me better than that and I would never right a letter like that. The old guy actually believed me and said my version makes more sense. I said there wasn't just one reason I was leaving, there were several reasons and I just wasn't happy. I went to the washroom and came back and shook his hand and another salesman's who had just came in. The guy that referred me didn't even stick around and had left without even saying goodbye. He knew I wasn't happy(he isn't either working there) but thinks I should have talked to owner first before leaving. I talked to him before I applied at the other place because he worked there for a while. There's nothing that could have been done keep me there. It's a company stuck in the dark ages with an owner that doesn't care as long as he fills his pockets. After all the lies and BS about my giving notice, I think it just confirms I made a good decision! The only reasons I can think why the branch manager said what he did was so the old guy would get a wake up call and because he's pizzed cause he'll have to stay later to close every second week. From what I was told, the owner can't stand the old guy either but figured he'd have to give him too much severance pay. Speaking of which, I'm entitled to get paid for the notice period even if they told me to leave right away. I'm also entitled to my remaining vacation pay. Now I can have a week off with pay and get some of my own stuff done. I need more of these GOOD days!:cool2::thumbsup:

You just found another good reason to give notice! :) If they send you walking, they either have the choice to pay you, or you can apply for unemployment. Unemployment is a bit of a pain, but at least the option is there. And, yes, you do get your remaining vacation pay. They cannot legally keep that from you. Best of luck, sounds like a great decision on your part!

Twenty years ago, I worked for a construction company as a superintendent building an elementary school. I was having problems with the main office Project Manager not ordering materials in time even though I repeatedly told him when I needed them to stay on schedule.

They had a second project building a gym for the city. The City had an Iranian project engineer who thought a "little different" and was having problems with the superintendent on the gym job. The Project Engineer first demanded the Superintendent be removed and then his successor also removed.

The president of my company came to me and told me I was going there next to finish the job. I figure "Oh Sugar" there goes my job!

They replace me on the school job with an 18 year old kid (who just happened to be the General Superintendents son - more on that later).

I go to the Gym project and lo and behold, the Iranian PM and I get along fabulously. The project smooths out and starts moving along nicely.

About 3 or 4 months later the General Superintendent comes to me and says your fired because you screwed up the school project (yeah, the one his son is on that is now months behind schedule and looking at $1000 per day liquidated damages).

I tell my Iranian friend and he goes ballistic. He goes back to the city offices and talks to the City Engineer.

The next day he calls me and tells me that the City is going to hire me as a Special Inspector on the Gym job to oversee the contractor. :cool2:

BEST DANG JOB I EVER HAD!

I couldn't even count for the tens of thousands of dollars I COST that BASTARD! :licking:

That is one of the best stories I've ever heard.:laughing::laughing::laughing:
You just made my day, thank you!

You can't get unemployment if you quit unless there's some pretty serious reasons why you're quitting. In Alberta you're supposed to get notice or pay in lieu of notice if you're terminated for other than good cause. For something like theft or insubordination, they can fire you on the spot. If you're leaving it's common to give notice but if they want you gone NOW, they have to pay you for the notice period.
