""Maybe you should raise possums?""

Death to all possums.
In 1837 possums were introduced to this country to establish a fur trade. They have established themselves at the top of the food chain and by the 1980s there were an estimated 60-70million. Through control they are now down to about 30millon. The introduction of possums has been ecologically damaging because the native vegetation has evolved in the absence of mammalian omnivores. Possums selectively browse native vegetation causing particular damage to broadleaved trees, notably Metrosideros species including rata. This leads to competition for food with native forest birds, changes in forest composition, and eventually canopy collapse. Possums are opportunists and will eat the eggs of native birds.

Possum road kill is a "very" common sight and, regarding that reference above Opossum vs Viper, if my neighbours Dodge Viper runs over a possum it stays dead.

As well as the forest destruction possums are vectors of bovine tuberculosis, which is a major threat to the dairy, beef, and deer farming industries. Dairying is one of our major industries.

I usually have a trap set most nights and now-n-gain I win. The govt drops 1080 poison in the remote areas which upsets the greenies.

I have never heard of a possum bite, but they sure are intimidating.

There was at least one that bit. When I was about 9 or 10 years old, me and Daddy were squirrel hunting. I had shot a couple of squirrels with my 410 when we came across a possum up a tree. My Granny {on Mamma's side} had promised me she would bake me some possum and sweet potatoes if I would kill one. Well I started blazing away with the 410. I hit it several times, but it wouldn't fall out of the tree. Finally Daddy shot it with his 12 gauge and knocked it down. I put him in my game bag, and we went on our way. As it turned out, he was just playing possum. He bit me through the game bag, coat and shirt. I was lucky I had on so much clothes, but it still hurt like the dickens. But we knocked him in the head, and he stayed dead that time. True to her word, Granny baked him for me. The sweet potatoes set it off very well. If my memory serves me, that was the only time I have ate possum. Coon is a different matter. I have ate it many, many times. Even once for Christmas dinner.

coon and possum pie this early in the morning is upsetting my coffee Larro.
how can you eat that stuff? asked the silly Northerner....:D

and I know it does NOT taste like chicken...you must season the heck out of it.
do the intestinal worms and all the other infectious passengers float to the top so you can scoop them off?
Too much like New Guinea to me...

going to be a nice day today, 25 degrees now going up to high forties today, fifties for three days thereafter.
No way to take a tractor over a lawn in this stuff...this is when I wish I had turf tires...even R4's make a mess in this.

4.74 inches of precip ytd
if this keeps up, going to be another wet year in these parts.
But will this pattern continue?

As for rain, it seems like the haves are getting it good and the have-nots, well, start irrigating until the wells run dry. And California is a tinder box. More firefighters will die this year trying to manage those fires too. And it keeps happening over and over.

All this water and we can't control where it comes down. Now there's a sci fi solution that would transform agriculture in this country, simply allow each area to dial in the amount of rain they wanted and when. Can you imagine how well you could grow crops that way? And avoid the human tragedy of flooding?
I've always been partial to force field domes to do this, with adjustable drippers...but that sure would create problems for most aviators, so we need a transparent solution. Without dropping chemicals on us...

Man has tried to harness Mother Nature's power since the beginning. But we sure have not mastered Her.
I wonder if the American Indians would say we shouldn't...

but if we could, I'd be out on my tractor today hauling in downed trees on the farm, much on lawn areas.
But I can't. So fix it, ok? ;)

Need lots of ice in coffee this morning. 72° with clouds and wind gust this morning. Heading to 91° with clear skies and a good south breeze. Today will be the warmest day of the year. Many Winter Texans start planning their trip north after first 90° day of the year. We are doing that. But will be heading west instead of north. My weather APP is sending me daily winter storm warnings from back home.
