Good morning all. For the first time in many weeks we have high pressure coming and a possibility of a whole week of dry weather. Could at last be hay making time.
Rick, great picture of Maddie and Buddy
I can't help thinking Maddie should be driving something as tough and protective as Buddy was - a Volvo could be too boring, is there another classic she could borrow for the end of the school year - like a Sherman tank ?
I confess I am sometimes pleased to say goodbye to those that cause trouble, like the one that repeatedly got it's head stuck in a fence.
There are others though that it's hard not to become slightly attached to. This year we had a lamb born with a black patch over one eye, when most of them are all pure white. When the first lot went to market, this one weighed only 30kg. It must have received a tip off, as it managed to stay at exactly 30kg for many weeks, while the rest were all growing. Today it has a paint mark on it's rump that signifies it has reached optimum condition and weighs 40kg. "Patch" (really shouldn't give them names!) leaves on Thursday after a short but I would hope, fairly contented life and there is a chance I will have a slight lump in my throat as I close the gate.
I never feel bad though at helping to produce food and this land is far better suited for livestock than arable. Most ewes will keep calling for their lambs for a day or two after they have gone and that makes you even more aware that lives have been taken away, though of course if all humans became vegetarian, none of the lambs would have existed in the first place.
