Eric you were right. someone left it in gear and since it has to be in neutral when starting the warning message (which is not very clear, at least to us on this side of the pond) will appear when the ignition is turned on, even if only to check the hour meter. Tomorrow is a work day in the tractor shed and I get to find out who abuse my baby over the weekend.

Eric definitely won the kewpie doll on that one.
somehow we seem determined to make an acronym out of everything, make everything textable.
Unlike my drivel which is clearly old school.
Of course that is just a cheap ancient tech display, John Deere or not.
All of those pictograms, which I refer to as cryptograms, on all our machinery.
Like the one on my electronic draft control which I finally figured out operated from a no impact
to a full impact mode by turning a rotary dial. I was looking for the word off and never found it.

I thought about this and during the same timeframe Lycoming County, Williamsport, PA, my home town was just the opposite, but that may be reflective of the educational level of the locals. This was W.A.S.P. only country. Considering all the churches per capita it was truly ironic; and of course there were the bars per capita to consider as well. There seemed to be a church and a bar on every corner.

I spent 37 years as the owner of an Upholstery/Interior Design/Window treatment business, if it were not for the gay community I would have had about 30% less business. Two of my good friends today are Tim and Randy, owners of the Blue Moon restaurant and night club in Rehobeth Beach, DE. They talked us into coming to amateur night a few years ago, I never saw so many Liza Minnelli and Elton John imitations in my life. I never laughed that much in my life, they were very gracious to us and our money couldn’t be spent.

Now I知 thinking back of all the potatoes grandma made and hope they cleaned the pitchfork in between uses.

I was tired when I got home yesterday. But had a good time Saturday. The kid had a good night. Won 1 heat race and a final. He led the final flag to flag. The kid has some talent, he is just starting his 3rd season of racing, people are saying he has the talent to become pro.

Yeah, I've probably mentioned it before, but they are the only couple in our area who don't have a large machine to do stuff like that. Everyone either has a tractor or skid loader, except them. The husband is recently retired from the US Air Force, and the wife is a retired hospice nurse. He's local, but she's originally from NYC ... and the accent is still very thick. They are super nice, and have been buying eggs from us. They eat a lot of eggs, probably two dozen a week between the two of them.

PJS, you could plow in your PJ's with that cab tractor.

:laughing: No one needs to see that. It is definitely nice, Kyle, and that heater had me literally sweating by the time I was finished. This was one of the two main reasons we went with a cab tractor (the other being ground hornets in the pasture).

We had one of those and used it to dig potatoes. Easy to sift the dirt out and just have the spuds.

LS, here's the full answer. Short answer is I'm looking to enrich the sandy soil.


In short, there are about 7000 earthworms species in the world and roughly 5 of them are any good at composting. The earthworms you would find in your garden are of the burrowing familes of earthworms and while they do provide great aeration and do other cool stuff to the soil, they will not reside in densities sufficient to turn any significant organic waste into worm castings.

Composting earthworms (like red wigglers (eisenia fetida)) are of the epigeic variety meaning that they are surface dwellers, do not burrow, and will only be found in loosely packed leaf litter or manure piles, NOT in soil. So you can't throw composting worms into your garden as they will likely die unless you have that layer of leaf litter/leaf mold for them to live in and munch on.

Conversely, garden variety nightcrawlers love to burrow in denser soil but will not thrive living so closely to one another in an enclosed worm bin, so they won't do a great job of turning your household waste into worm castings.

As far as the magic going on in the bin, it comes down to a diverse microbe population as the microbes feed on the decomposing food waste and the worms feed on the microbes, excreting an even more microbe-rich "end product", pun very much intended. There are also plant growth hormones present in many vermicomposts which along with the microbes speed up germination, increase yield, promote root growth, contribute to water retention through better soil aggregation and provide a plant more able to resist pathogens and pests.

Some people say worm castings are a fertilizer...and that's not totally wrong. But the distinction is that fertilizers feed the plant, and worm castings feed the soil. To make worm castings in any significant quantity, you need a more controlled environment unless you live in San Diego!
