300UGUY, I cleaned the possum and helped Granny season it. She piled the sweet potatoes around it, wrapped it all in foil and baked it on low heat for three hours. It was very tender, and had the sweet flavor of the potatoes. I ate on it for most of a week. {no one else helped me eat it. Can you image that?}
Drew, when I came home from the Navy in 1983 I didn't have a job, or any money. But I did have a bad eating habit. For two and a half years I farmed part time with Daddy, did a little yard work in the summers and cut firewood in the winters. I also ate a lot of wild game. Rabbit is what I got tired of the quickest. I guess it is because you could kill two or three a day. And most days I did. I sold far more coon than I ate, as it brought a good price in the black community. But you would cook it just like pork. Grilling was my favorite way to cook it.
As poor as I was those three summers, it was one of the best times of my life. I had to come up with $20 a month for the light bill, a little for gas and insurance on my old Pinto, and an occasional six pack. I spent most of my time swimming, tubing or fishing on the Chipola River. These days I'm lucky to spend one day a year on the river.
