Good morning!!!!

71F, no measurable rain since midnight, .15 inches yesterday, just timely enough to end my fence efforts.

Ahhh, today :) stretch the final portion, build a gate...

Have a great day.

. I also plan on getting back to the beaver pond to see what they are up to. They have been piling-up brush in the water near their lodge. I don't know if they are storing under ice food for the winter, or building an in-law apartment.

boy would I love to see pictures of that.
if they are adding an apartment, make sure they get the right permits and meet the beaver code.:D

Ask, and once in a very great while you may receive.

No in-law apartment. I sort of wondered if they were doing an addition, or what. They must expect a long winter.

I'm sure that pile of brush to the left of their lodge goes all the way to the bottom, about 6 feet I think. Beavers cache branches on the bottom to retrieve for food while they are locked in by ice. Supposedly, they semi-hibernate, get hungry, eat, go back to hibernating. They might give birth somewhere in there. I could really use a beaver cam.

marvelous picture, ice on the pond! thank you Dave.
Get your beaver camera, and sell the pics to Wild Kingdom for millions...:D
of course we'll do your preview work...
are they protected where you are?

what a horrible diet. Sure hope they eat something other than wood.
To get their vitamins or whatever...:confused3:

Not protected. There is a trapping season, but I don't want these trapped. Beavers can be a real nuisance in the wrong places.

They tend to favor the beech trees about 4" in diameter. They will work on and drop larger stuff.

In the pic, across the water on the far side, you can see it is looking a bit bare. That is the area where they have been doing their "harvesting." It slopes down to the water so they get a gravity boost dragging stuff.

The trees standing in the water are dead. Those are mostly eastern hemlocks with a couple yellow birch. Now, if a pileated woodpecker would make some cavities, or I put up some nest boxes, it would make a great wood duck nesting spot. Wood ducks nest in cavities and when the ducklings are ready, they drop into whatever is below them, water or near water is preferable.

This is the second set of beavers we've had in ten years. The original pond, which was deserted for about six of those ten years, is to the left of the pic. The new bunch of beavers decided to expand into new territory with more trees, which accounts for the 40-50 year-old trees standing in water. They will eventually eat themselves out of house and home, move on, and the cycle begins again.

Having "suspicioions" makes for self fulfilling prophecy. Go with an open mind. Plan to have fun. (Well, as much fun as moving can be.) Be glad you are getting back in your own place.

One of the things we do in competition, be it with horses, dogs, or just ourselves, is to mentally picture that "perfect run", over and over in our head. That really does carry over. (Same with expecting the horse to knock the barrel, or dog to take the wrong jump, etc.) Mental imaging is HUGE!

"Mental imaging is HUGE!" All I can think of is RAIN DANCE!!!!! :p :licking:

With it dry here, and temps going to be in the 80s on Sunday, I'll probably be doing that dance! Maybe I'll post some pics in the future! :D

Beautiful picture, many years ago I went 4 wheeling in North Leeds.

Nice picture Dave. Twenty six years ago when I worked for a seed farmer near Blountstown, we had beavers in the creek that cut through the farm. The land was already low, so when they would build their dam up higher, more of the fields were unusable. Many a day I used rakes and an ax to tear their dam down. The next morning it would be repaired.

There was also a beaver pond across the river from our hayfield. When we lived in town, it was closer to go to the river down there than drive the long way around to the farm. {6 miles compared to 14} I would take the canoe and fish in the pond. There were always plenty of fish, but you had to watch out for cotton mouths. Since the pond had flooded land that had been timbered years before, there were lots of stumps for the moccasins to lay on. Sitting low in the water in the canoe, you were often at eye level to them. That will get your heart racing.

No snakes to worry about here. No fish in the pond either. There are some tiny hatchling fish, trout or some sort of minnow maybe, that show up in the stream below the beaver's dam, but no way for them to get up into the pond. I guess I could be a "bucket biologist" and move some. Feed the herons. :)

Beavers can be pests for sure. Flooding fields, roads, lawns, etc. A couple years back, we had a somewhat heated TBN discussion about beavers. A member, Studor from Ontario, CAN IIRC, was really upset about them killing his timber crop trees. I can see that, but like so many things, at some point somewhere we have to give Mother Nature a little elbow room. I get a kick out of watching what they are up to. I never see them, just a swirl in the water once in a while.

I'm in the house at MossflowerWoods, the only clean spot is the part of the bedroom I cleaned and set up the bed so I can sleep. House is a disaster and we've got at least anouther day of this tomorrow.

It is raining outside, must have been me visualizing FG19 just like she told me to do...

Having a smidgon of Jack on the rocks and off to bed...
Night all,

Years back up north of Bangor the typical response to a beaver dam problem was to first try to trap them out and then just plain old triple whatever dynamite might be needed. Even that only worked for a while. Impressive blast, however.

Well good morning folks!

I've got my first cup of coffee poured and George Jones on the stereo - I don't think there is a better way to start a Saturday, or any day for that matter.

It is very sunny this morning but I know it'll be freezing outside so I doubt I'll attempt anything outdoors but rather concentrate on indoor tasks (of which there are also plenty).

Have a good day.

Coffee is brewing. 28° with a couple of clouds this morning. Heading to 56° with sun early. Then clouds and wind later today. Got a couple sets of plastic ornamental shutters to install today.
Randy, get better soon.
Good Morning All.

good morning. Today is work day at the farm, log splitting and garden cleanup. And I look out and see it's drizzling. Wonderful. But it will stop soon, and now all the wood is wet. Going to get split no matter what...
Have a four man crew, and I think some wives.

First cup with a wee drop of Dewars in it for those cold mornings...
and then on to waffles drenched in Glenfiddich. And then a nice nap. :D
