Disaster averted ...

3F @ 00:00 and headed for a low of -11F ... can hear the wind howling outside.

Just woke up from an 8 hour nap ...

I ended up getting about 2 or 3 hours sleep Friday night, with most of it tending the fire in the furnace, trying to get it fired up (with wet, unseasoned aspen :confused2:) ... managed to do that and keep the house above 60F ...

Saturday morning we were essentially out of any firewood here at the house, and only a couple of rounds up at the shop.

Early Friday afternoon I had pooched the chain on the saw by trying to cut through one of those aspen logs that had big chunks of ice on it. Apparently there were some rocks or gravel in it as well, because it really did a number on the saw chain.
Remember the furnace?
The log splitter?
The tractor?

Around 17:00 the wife called and said she was about to head out and I needed to come down to the house to tend the fire which wasn't burning all that well and bring more wood ...

I went out to cut some logs but nada ... she no cut. So I sharpened another chain which was about ready to be tossed anyways and went back out. First pull the saw starts to fire, second pull the cord on the starter breaks ...

Managed to get that fixed, which was a complete PITA, cut some rounds and chucked them in the back of the van (tractor is still out of commission) and headed down to the house.
The WIFE?
Valentines DAY!
Saturday morning rolled around and @ 08:00 we were essentially out of wood ... with about a 3 or 4 hour window before the cold front rolled through and conditions became really brutal.

I had went up to the shed around 07:00 and got a fire going and got the good saw chain sharpened up but ended up having to cut down the rakers as well, since I had to take so much off to clean it up.

The 'Cake rolled out of the sack around 08:30 and I informed her that we needed to get crack-a-lackin' and commence emergency wood gathering operations. Since she had not yet had her coffee she was not pleased.
Happy Valentines day Hon, come split wood before coffee.
I went out and cut down three ash trees at the edge of the woods along the driveway (so they could be loaded into the van and moved to the house relatively easily)

I was in the shop fueling and and oiling up the saw when my young helper showed up with a guy he works for and a pickup bed load of wood - mostly oak - from a tree trimming job. Had them dump it down at the house. Then The 'Cake and I gathered up the ash and loaded it in the van (aka mobile firewood storage unit)

After that I had a spot of breakfast and then cut up the wood that had been dropped out while my sweetie stacked it in the garage. The front blew in right as were finishing up ... like Murph said, it was white-out conditions ... with the snow coming down hard and the wind a-howlin' ...

I was overdue on a little welding project for a TBN friend ... so before I hit the rack I went back up to the shop and glued that together ... and then gave him a call and told he could swing by and pick it up.

By the time I got back down to the house the woman had a roaring fire going and the temp was up to 65F.

At that point I hit the rack and was dead to the world.

Y'all stay warm ... and safe.
Looks like you pulled it off, but I was waiting to hear the van broke down :)

Naw ... I let her have her coffee ... before I made the second call ... :D

Just wanted to make sure that she kept her eye on the prize ... and remained aware of the potential consequences of inaction ...

Looks like you pulled it off ...
It's what I do ... ;)

but I was waiting to hear the van broke down :)
That happened the other day ...

I wired up the muffler (as a temporary fix) ... before I went to pick up steel on Friday ... :D

Good Morning. The heavy clouds have lifted overnight, leaving us surrounded by mist, with a hazy blue sky above.

RS - Admire the way you can smile through it all.

Last year I got a full truck load of wood from a felling job in a public park. It was all fresh, so I set to cut it up for stacking.
I'm used to getting timber from old fence lines, full of barbed wire and staples, so I was looking forward to a few hours of cutting some nice clean wood for a change.
I even put on a new chain.
Second branch in and the Stihl makes a strange scream then dies, bar wrapped in high tensile standed wire.
The new chain was a right off, but fortunatley I was ok. My fault, I should have looked closer.

Are you anywhere close to Port Isaac? I may need to visit Doc Martin.

Doc Martin ? - at first I thought you were after a new pair of boots, then my wife put me straight about the TV program by that name - not the famous shoe makers that sounds the same but spelt slightly different - Dr Martens.

Not seen the program, but I do know Port Isaac is down on the North coast of Cornwall, about a day from here.

The coast all around Cornwall is very rugged and scenic. In summer the roads that take you there can get quite busy. I remember, when our children were still small, going there for a holiday and getting in a queue of traffic that crept slowly for hours on a very hot day. At the time air conditioning was not very common in cars in the UK, so our car was almost a mobile oven. Every car we have had since that day has AC for sure.

18 degrees only creeping up to 30 today. 20-30mph winds gusting to 40mph. And a very cold week ahead.
Going to stay inside today, get caught up on housework, and maybe work on organizing the upstairs.
no snow at all, maybe a little later this week

12 and winds predicted up to 50, with -7 wind chill...high today 23F. Got a dusting of snow last night...looks like the Tuesday storm may fizzle. We should see above freezing temps again next Saturday.

Wood stove is eating firewood like candy.

RS, glad I'm not having to go out in this stuff to gather any. Your ordeal sounds like no fun.

Thankfully no power outage. Took a hike to survey wind damage, and so far found only a few dead limbs down, and the rain cover on our gas grill blew off and about 100 yards down the hill.

Eric - for those of us in the South that think 110 Fahrenheit is "very hot weather", and when I lived in Vermont I thought above 85 was "very hot weather" what do you call "very hot weather"?

Good morning all, -6F here heading to 3F this afternoon. Had yesterday off but the wind and snow kept us inside most of the day. Blew snow in the morning to clear driveway and street. Went back out last night and reblew street so I could get out this morning to go to work.

9 degrees right now...high of 5 today (so, I guess we're at the "high" now) than dropping to -13 tonight.
My neighbor's son and two others cleared the roof, walks (the one I can't get with the tractor) and deck. Place looks like a fortress with walls of snow around it.
They did a really good job and worth every penny I paid them.

I ordered a transfer pump with a hose and nozzle. Now I need a 35-55 gallon drum.

Well we got the snow yesterday and last night, it was coming down pretty good at times. Now its a OK morning, -14c and overcast. Back out to the Oil patch I go to make a few bucks. Have a great day all!

-13F /-25C some how sounds colder in Celsius. Turned the humidifier down a touch to try and get the frost off the windows. A lot of wind and some snow last night but almost no accumulation. That's good as far as I am concerned. I understand that this cold is going to continue for a good part of the week, oh well it is winter. Happy family day tomorrow for any in Ontario. Dave in the tropic isle, how about a nice warm weather forecast for the rest of us freezing in the North.

/ Good morning!!!! #30,615
Oh, happy day. 59° and overcast this morning. Possible rain this afternoon, but they changed the forecast again and reduced our chance to 20%. Heading to Austin bto visit a nursery and pick up some things for the garden nand maybe a few bare root fruit trees. Hopefully can spend some quality time with the bicycle today as well.

Hope you are having a good day.
