Sorry for the wrong link Don. I had multiple tabs open, trying to read his earlier post that might have had more info on him.

RNG, don't worry about my skin being to thin.

Drew, I read if you plant 50 acres of black walnuts, your kids or grandkids will be rich in about 50 years from the wood.

They will curse him endlessly for the falling branches, nuts and husking issues until time comes to harvest the tree itself.

A vfd in our county went to put out a grass fire. The owner had tried using his tractor to put it out. Barbed wire and t-post were found wrapped around the wheels and the owner died of burns. IMG_0254.JPG

I don't get falling branches, but they sure do hang low when loaded. I raise my deck and mow over the nuts on the ground. Don't know where they go, after a couple weeks it seems they disappear.

Sad news Don. Apparently it isn't wet enough to burn. That must've been on one of those really windy days.

My place is sopping wet, and with this weather, it will take a month to dry out.

I didn't know black walnuts are good to eat.

Buckeye, are any of your trees big enough to saw any heartwood from the middle of the trunk? If so, they could be worth some pretty pennies.

I'd better hurry to bed before Eric catches me up typing.

Good night all.

Good Evening all.43F this morning, overcast with near calm winds and .5 in rain in the gauge. Temp rose to 52F some drizzle, but no sunshine. Had intended to start putting the mantle up, but needed to make a trip to Denton, then detoured to bike shop in Richardson. Did get a ride in today, as well.

Good morning. Dry and frost free, the sky is full of grey clouds that can't make their mind up what to do next. Lots of rumbling going on outside this morning - the rail company needs to do urgent work on a slipped embankment by bringing machinery and materials down our shared driveway, then over a neighbors field to the track side. They have been bringing in a continuous stream of trucks filled with building rubble to make an access track along the field.

The shared driveway is about 450 yards long up a 10-12 degree slope. It was in a bad state before, having once been tarmaced, though most of that had worn away before I ever came here. I don't legally own it, only the right to pass over it in return for paying a quarter towards any maintenance work on it. In the past I have been the only one who has been filling the potholes. The surveyor acting for the railroad confirmed by email that any damage will be made good and that a new surface of crushed granite will be put down over the old worn out tarmac. Bups, can you give me any guidance on how thick a layer of granite would need to go over a worn out but otherwise substantially sound track ?

Drew, if you like trees that grow nuts, have you considered growing a few sweet chestnut too (Castanea sativa )? They are one of my favorites, producing nuts that can be roasted under a grill and to me taste even better than walnut. The ones I first planted from seed (nuts collected from friend's trees and a local market) 12 years ago produced their first crop this year.

43 out this AM. Soggy ground here too, a month or so to dry out. Horse pens are pure mud, so they stall and go directly to the fields.

I collected over 1,000 black walnuts from 1 tree (yeah, it is hugely, LOL). I ate one. Husking is not an issue, it's cracking the nut for a little meat. I put them in my burn pile, checked yesterday, since I walk by everyday, and the squirrels did their job. The funny part about the squirrels? When they are eating the nut, they are usually over the house., and I have a metal roof. Nice and annoying.

I collect via a bucket, since that tree sits in a landscaped, lawn type area. I have a few others that big down by the creek and a smaller version by the koi-less pond. Don't stand under any of them when the nuts are ripe. LOL.

Have a great day all, be safe.

33 going to 57.

It got up to 63 yesterday, sunny and windy, so I washed the Kubota. I had planned on just washing the left rear wheel, but such a nice day went for the whole shebang. The left rear wheel seemed to have an accumulation of leaked fluid and dirt. Anyone dealt with a rear axle seal leak? Did a quick search but not found too much.

Irv, hope you are doing better today.

We have one black walnut, in a pasture out of the way, so no mess to worry about. My dad brought two pecan trees here as sort of a housewarming present when we moved in. I planted them in a spot near the walnut, thinking they'd grow well in the same type soil, etc. It really was just far enough away that it wasn't good soil for them, so took over 20 years to get our first pecans. Very tasty when the squirrels are generous enough to share.

This appears to be tar and gravel or prime and seal. If the surface is still intact adding stone on top of this surface will only slide off in time leaving you a mess so to speak. Existing surface should be regraded then add 2 to 4 inches of stone after filling in holes. Just my opinion others may differ

a much cooler 41 going to 57 today with a major washout planned for this weekend, heavy rain predicted

20 years for pecans Billy? I'm not going to make it that long....
I know, I need to find the pecan variety labeled Plug And Play. They always work right away....;) not

Aahh Eric, the sweet burned smell of chestnuts roasting in a street cart on a cold winter day in Philadelphia, or New York City. Probably Baltimore and Boston too...did we learn this little treat from your neck of the woods? Further West, do they roast chestnuts in the city streets? Mostly, any in St. Louis? Such a distinctive smell to greet you when you walked outside of a downtown building on a cold day. Toppop and others, I bet we have all enjoyed roasted chestnuts on a street corner. Well, tried them...

Me? I didn't like them at all...tried several times, kind of mushy, sweetish, prefer to stick with other nuts, and I love nuts. My late wife was deathly allergic to nuts so for 15 years I could eat none, couldn't kiss her afterwards, made that mistake only once. Having one's wife look at you with giant rubbery lips and a swollen face was enough so that I never forgot that again... But now...I always have nuts at home, usually roasted almonds. Chestnuts are neat though, I grow lots of things I don't eat myself, like hot peppers. One of the prettiest things in my garden are hot peppers and I can't eat one of them. Zero problem giving peppers away though.

I don't like figs either, but I think I might plant a row of fig trees also. They grow very well here.

having said all this not sure chestnuts grow in a warm coastal climate. I know they grow up North. Here's what the local good nursery stocks, so it's probably what grows here. This list reminds me to replant the three sour cherry trees I bought that did not make it. I'll try one more time since cherry trees are on the list. A home made sour cherry pie in my mind is just pure nirvana.

Grapes
Berries (Strawberry, Blueberry, Rasberry, Blackberry)
Figs
Persimmon
Apple
Pear
Peach
Nectarine
Cherry
Pecan
Walnut

Drew, your list looks great. You're motivating me to replant some things that we used to have but died off of old age or disease. I've never been into the spraying, but may give it a try.

Maybe try apricots, if you like them. We had a couple - the first trees to flower, and a beautiful display but our usual late frosts killed off the fruits most years. Great taste when we got some. They'll probably do better your way.

Poured second cup of coffee. 51° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 55° with spotty afternoon rain. Weather forecast for next 3 day calls some serious rain in valley and snow in the mountains. Like RNG's area, reservoirs are filling. Will be nice to see water in the Salt River in the valley. Going to spend the day at Barret Jackson Auction.
Irv, hope you back and other pains get better soon.
Good Morning All.

Good morning. 30 headed all the way up to 34 with snow in the forecast.

I have my day cut out for me. I need to put in a new motherboard in this HAF922 box. Transfer my 2 video cards over and all the associated wires and stuff as well as get the SSD set up on my C drive and cut a new vent into the side of the case. There is already a vent there, I am just going to make it bigger.

After all that is done, my new chains arrived yesterday and I will be installing them. Maybe todays' work will bleed over into tomorrow and Saturday.
