Well, at least now you know, Ron. Surgery and recovery will probably be unpleasant, but not nearly as bad as just letting it go.
I have friends and relatives like that, oldtimer. I suspect many of us do. Wife and I have a friend who, during her previous marriage, was distraught over having her power shut off over unpaid bills. Wife (who was still girlfriend then) stepped in and loaned them the money (nearly $2K) to pay it and get their power back on for the sake of their kids just before winter about 10 years ago. It's still unpaid to this day. Not so much as a penny. All the Facebook posts about all the weekly woo-hoo partying she always does just burned my Wife to the point that she barely ever talks to her anymore. Has money to party every weekend, but not to pay back debts. We've lost count of how many trips to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta she's taken since then. At some point, you just come to understand that it wasn't a "loan" at all, and just write it off as gone.
