Grew up halfway between two towns, I went to school in town with about 1200, but could have gone to school in town of 11,000.. Now I live near metro area with about 500k.

Good evening. Quiet weather day. High was about 33. Tomorrow rain and about 46. Next week looks a bit cool again.

Training went well today. The younger employee I have been mentoring probably did about half the program today. In the 10 months he has been there, he has learned a lot. I am very impressed. There are 3 of us, the other one, who tends to be a problem child even did decent though not as much of the presentation. I won稚 say I was impressed, but he did much better than expected. I was a bit off today, not sure why. Just did not get into a groove. But then, usually, in these training sessions, I am the only one talking, not used to getting support. Guess I need to figure out how to do this training with actual help.

I know what Buckeye is talking about with the town he grew up in. A lot of towns in that part of Ohio are getting smaller. The county I live in is the opposite. It has started growing, never thought I would see that in my lifetime.

Everyone have a safe and good evening

It reads like a successful training presentation. "Educating" presenters always seem to work harder than the hopefully recipient presentees.BTDT Any retention of the training material presented is a success by any standard. Good luck with the "problem child."BTDT as both.

Good evening all. 48F for the start, overcast, calm wind. Light to moderate wind, overcast stayed all day, and high temp was 63F. More cold is on the way and the possibility of frozen precip. Errands got put off till tomorrow, lost some 2032 batteries spent too long looking for them, never found them :banghead: Did get a bike ride in, late this week does not look so good for outside activity.
Lynn sorry about the new found damage, can you fix or do you have to take it in.
PJ was that Granite City? I grew up near Lambert Field.
RNG good luck fixing the winch.
Kyle hope you get the BP sorted out.
prayers for all.

PJ, had to laught at the "little" town of 40k people. The largest town where i grew up was 3500 people, more like 2500 now. The whole county is 14K.

Granite City used to be the largest city in Southern Illinois. Not so anymore. It's shrunk to about 30K these days, and a couple other cities have grown beyond that. I say "little" because we are in the St. Louis metro area, and of course the 300K people over in that city makes everything else relatively little. Honestly, though, when I was growing up, it did kind of have a small town feel to it, in spite of its population. Maybe because we lived on the very eastern edge of town. We were the second house from the end of our street, and beyond the neighbor's house was farm fields as far as you could see (which are all developed into neighborhoods and businesses now).

Wikipedia noted that Trenton IL has a population of 2,619 -ish. We're about 4 miles from all those people, and we don't mind that at all.

1 degree right now...high in the mid-teens with some snow showers.

/ Good morning!!!! #89,868
-12°F going to a high of +12. Wind S 6 mph. Periods of light snow.

I am chainsaw shopping today. The neighbour across the street has a Stihl and looks out for us when I am not home, but I want a new one for here. So far I have settled on a Husqvarna battery powered one, model 120i, it comes with a battery and charger. I will get an extra battery for it.
My last saw I bought used for 50 bux running, power head only. The clutch was out off it and the bar was gone. I took it to a repair guy I know and he put a clutch into it and a new 16" bar and chain for $100. So all totaled it cost me $150.oo. That saw lasted me 14 years until some smartass ran it on straight gas. Burned a hole in the piston.
With a battery powered one I don't have the hassle of mixing gas and oil, not do I have to put up with the vibration which my shoulders wont put up with any more.
I wouldn't buy any saw at all except for the tree that is down. I don't want to rely on my neighbours to get me out of trouble.

Have a good day all

Wngsprd, maybe we can meet in SNP sometime for a hike. I am way out of shape..... A few yrs ago i was doing lots of 10mile hikes on the AT with the scouts.

I'd love to do it (but not 10 miles :) )

Got up early this morning, packed up a daypack and was ready to drive up and see sunrise at Hawksbill only to do a double check of the weather, and then called the SNP phone line...found out the Skyline Drive is closed due to snow/ice. :( Well, plenty to do around here.

32 going to 48.

LS, great skunk story. When it snowed last week, I found skunk tracks and followed to a den...now I mostly avoid that area.

Thomas, crazy how that tower blew over.

Buppies, since I am throwing the frisbee, I haven't taken any photos. Good idea so I'll ask my wife to try to take some.

Lynn, sorry your sled got damaged. Hope you don't miss much action while it is getting repaired.

Did Mrs. Eric have to get a cast?

Good morning all. Another frosty start then it should soon warm up as there is not a single cloud in the sky. Hardly any wind, which in my new domestic tasks mindset is a shame as the first lot of washing that is now out is going to take a little longer to dry.

At the hospital with my wife all morning yesterday and into the afternoon. The fracture clinic notice board showed a 60 minute wait time when we got there and that kept extending as the morning passed. Not complaining though, especially after learning about some of the medical costs you get charged in other countries. It was comforting to look over the waiting room and think that no one need have any money concerns over treatment as it is all free, paid out of everyone's taxes. The drive back was spectacular, thanks to all the blackthorn blossom at the roadside.

Good news is that neither of us has so far succumbed to food poisoning from my food preparation and my fingers are still intact (never realised before that sweet potatoes are so much tougher to cut than ordinary potatoes), though I did loose a bit of thumb to a new parmesan cheese greater that is more vicious than any of my tools.

Speedy recovery wish for your bride Eric.

Wng, the fracture is in the top part of her arm, so they say no cast needed, just a sling, care and patience. Julie in short supply of patience though I have an abundance - she's just reluctant to borrow. :confused3: :)

L4N, if by lower branches, you mean those that are now in contact with the ground, it is probably easier to leave those alone between ground and the trunk until last as they will be under a lot of force from the weight above and will want to pinch your shiny new saw. If the tree is not hung up in others and for the most part down on the ground I would clear away branches that are hanging in the air first as they are easy cutting, remove weight and let you get a clearer view of what is left. At that smashed stump, my first job would be to cut away any vertical spiky bits that are waiting to impale you if you lost your balance.

You have plenty of time at the moment, so instead of worrying about cutting that trunk, put the chainsaw away and have some fun instead. Pile some dry branches underneath, light a fire, then we can have a competition to see who can guess how long before it burns through and drops to the ground :)

Poured first cup of coffee. 17° with snow showers this morning. Heading to 28° with continued snow showers. May get up to 4". 2" already on ground. Not much planned today.

PJ, wife's parents were from St Louis. Got to visit a lot of the area until her parents passed away in the late 80's. Worked all the auto plants in the area. Last trip there was in 2017. Things have sure changed.

Looking, Husqvarna looks good. Very similar to the Lynxx from Harbor Freight. Rick has one and likes it I think. One thing I found with Lithium batteries and chargers is they do not play well in cold weather. They lose power faster and some do not like to charge in temperatures much below freezing. I keep batteries and chargers in my heated shop.

Thomas, that is a large tower. I am sure it affected a lot of cell phone users. Found this picture of the tower.

Eric, glad wife is doing OK. Wear proper protection when using tools. Even those in the kitchen.

Good Morning All.

Looking out my man cave/studio window shows no sign of improvement or change in the weather then the last 5 days. -27 Celsius with blowing snow continues. Fire is never a good thing but I do love burning wood. My wife and mother in law doesn't like the mess and fears fire so we don't have a wood stove in the house at this time. I have a small scale firewood operations but instead of burning wood, we give about $3000 to the oil companies to keep us warm. lol. Hopefully I will be building a cabin this summer and I am going to invest in a wood cook stove. Sitting in a wood stove heated cabin that overlooks our beach will make our long winters with -30 temperature much more enjoyable.

-10 and going to a high of 10ーF. Wind WNW 17 mph. Mainly sunny.
No snow in the forecast until next Saturday.

A question for you guys that cut up busted trees. My Spruce is all but 'down', 98 % of the tree is horizontal, but it is still connected to the crown by a few pieces of meat and bark and those are within arms reach and not over head. The question is would you cut the bottom side of the bends or the top side?
I will try to get pics after sunrise.

Have a good day all

If U cut from the top your saw will bind as it will be pinched, from the bottom not.
OK, maybe a bit on top, like 20% as you'll get a cleaner cut rather than a long big splinter when it drops.
Be careful.
