Years ago when building battery racks for ups systems for process control rooms we used welded angle iron and square tubing,
after priming and painting we sprayed on rubberized auto undercoating,
never saw any corrosion on those racks several years later when going back in for upgrades on the controls.

Your bring back memories of things I used to work with and on,
glass jar wet cells series wired together to total 144 volts,
then several racks of those paralleled together to feed large ups's that were line interactive.
Shutting down one bank at a time going thru making and breaking all the connections on every individual cell cleaning and greasing.
Checking each cell with the hydrometer, topping off each with distilled water
I hadn't thought about those battery rooms in a long time.
Some of the cells where round but most of them where square glass boxes,
we would even put new lead plates and separator papers in them on some of the shutdown maintenance outages.
Nothing like that rubber apron, and even back then safety goggles,
removing plates and separator papers, rubber dividers and rebuilding the individual cells.

Had a lot of clothes that had numerous little holes all over them,and lots of little blisters at times.

Good evening all. 34F for the start, calm wind, clear sky. Sky stayed mostly clear, wind stayed light to moderate, and high temp was 66F. Got through most of the resetting of the clocks, still have the clock in the explorer to go. Nade it to Chapel on time, and made wife's breakfast. The rest of the day was energy conservation.
Randy, we downsized 600 sq ft in last move, cant imagine living in 600 sq ft or 200 like some of the smaller ones :confused2:
Ron, that pic of Sassy is priceless.
David sorry you are having so much battery trouble. It is not god not to have a good way forward.
RNG and David it has been interesting to listen to your solar projects I wish you both success in your projects

When was all that going on, Lou? Scotty's Castle near Death Valley was running on generators and batteries back in the 30s. The battery room is still there, and full of old rubber bodied batteries, or at least it was before the floods of a few years back. That stuff looked old, but not as old as what you describe?

It is a beautiful morning here, perfect for getting on with the water tank cover, however the sight of two sheep wandering up the track reminds me that instead I need to get on with some fence repairs.

RNG, lead acid batteries are a great choice for your application and paying the extra for AGM brings lots of other benefits too, so that should be money well spent. If you can arrange to not deplete the batteries very far before switching back to grid or generator, they should have a very long life. During a wildfire you want to be able to run them right down though, which makes it more of a challenge :confused2:

Metal racking, with each battery sat on an extra sheet of plastic/wood for bonus cushioning and insulation would be my choice too, unless the manufacturer has better advise. The charger may have internal circuitry that detects if a single positive or negative conductor makes contact with ground, in which case the racking can be grounded, possibly best via a simple current limiting resistor. Coating the metal with insulating paint like LouNY mentions would make it even safer.

Good morning;

31 and going to a high of 39°F. Wind SE 8 mph. A mix of rain and snow for today.

We got another inch or so of snow overnight.
I will go out after daylight and survey my domain and the rest of the driveways I plow, all 3 of them and make a decision on the spot.
Last spring I told the postmaster that I would no longer be plowing out the group box at the end of the road. I did it for 24 years for free and I wasn't doing it anymore. The PO contracted it out last fall. I did not bid.

After I plow I need to go to town and pick up the DILs' script.

That is all that is on my plate for today.

Poured first cup of coffee. 41° with light rain this morning. Heading to 53° with rain ending in morning and cloudy skies in afternoon. Sassy has come out of the closet. But will not go outside beyond the area where I had cleared leaves for warning flags. About the only thing on my list is take wireless fence to UPS.

Eric, sheep on tracks cannot be a good thing.

David & RNG, I enjoy your reports on generators and solar. Just wish they were not so expensive.

LS, we lived in our 300 sq ft motorhome for up to 6 months a year. It was doable. But it was great to get back to 1,800 sq ft and 3 out buildings at end of a trip. Not sure how we would have handled wife's illness in that small area.
