Good morning! 69˚F Cloudy 50% chance of rain.


My plumbing project yesterday did not go as planned. The access holes for the water cut-off valves were filled with water and mud and too numerous. As I was discussing which access cover was the one for the house cutoff with one neighbor another came out, then another and all four of us were trying to determine what all the valves were used for. The other three had bought their house new but still none of us were completely sure what logic/pattern was used on the 18 covered valves between the four houses.

I texted the neighborhood rep to contact the irrigation expert for our neighborhood but no reply.

By the end of the day I know the black square cover is the main meter for two houses and the square green cover is for the irrigation back flow valve for each house. The one round green cover has wires so it must be the auto valve for the section of sprinklers near the boxes, the other round green cover must be a shutoff for the irrigation system and the other two round green covers must both cut off water for the house, one right near the meter - where the city stopped and one in my yard so I can cut the water off without going in my neighbors yard, where the meter is located, to turn off the water. Today, if it does not rain, I'll dig the valves out and see if this is right.

Good Morning
It’s 65 and going to 90 today without a cloud in the sky all day.
I think that it clear that the rain function on the Tempest reads higher than the actual accumulation. Every other sensor seems spot on though. I’ll keep monitoring with the Davis and old fashioned cylinder for while, but it pretty clear already.

Yesterday’s trip was more adventure than I cared for. Started off with the catering being delivered to the wrong place. At least it was at the right airport. The big issue was the weather. There were thunderstorms pretty much down the entire east coast and over the Atlantic. Enough over the ocean that the overwater routes were all shut down. That made for a longer bumpy ride to FL. Trip from FL to Bahamas was fine, weather was along the coast. Trip home was over water, but lots of deviations for weather. I was enough behind schedule that I sent an email to the band from Marsh Harbour, they decided to take the night off. I was disappointed, but by the time I got 50 lbs of pork into the smoker and went to bed I was exhausted.

Today I’m going to help setup for Grandson’s first birthday party, it will be a big outdoor party with lots of people and food. Then I get to enjoy the party. Don’t plan to do much else.

I went to an electric motor repair shop in the city yesterday...been in business since 1945...I don't think they've changed anything since...was very cool with the way it was laid out, the signage and and antiques...nostalgia.

Old shops always fascinate me, and cheap imports have made electric motor repair a thing of the past except for large 3 phase motors. The automotive starter/generator repair business is practically non existent these days.

Thomas, I think there are too many National this and that days, but sounds like today is a good one. Yesterday being donut day, my wife took a box over where her mom lives for the folks working there.

There’s a shop here (Pasco) that started as a small battery, starter, generator shop, mostly selling batteries and rebuilding the others. Anytime he could get a core he’d rebuild and put it on the shelf.
One Sunday morning I was getting ready to go boating and as always I went start it to check everything before heading to the river. Starter was dragging badly. It was a 502 Chevy and used a special starter which nobody that was open had.
Dave always said if you need something call me. Just on a whim I called the shop and he was there working on his Buick Grand National. He said bring me the starter and ham and egg biscuit from Hardee’s and I’ll rebuild it. It almost to longer to get the breakfast than for him to rebuild the starter. He charged me $20, mostly for parts.
There are now multiple stores, they sell auto parts, do service and mechanical repairs sell golf carts, etc… Dave is retired and living in Florida. A case study in honesty and hard work.

Lawn needs mowing, drives me nuts not having a mower. Maybe soon with my friend's loaner.
Right now things hurt enough not sure it's overly wise anyway.
Not that that has ever stopped me...

Across the river in Lambertville NJ was the George Green machine shop. I went there on a high school trip, and
was fascinated by the incredible system of 18th century overhead belts and pulleys that powered each of the machining tools
in the large building.
Whole thing was powered by a water race I believe running through there, an old creek. Now it's all built over. I'd be curious to know
how old George regulated speed with that arrangement.

zinnias are just starting to bloom, have lots of them planted.

Many of the old mills used an over shoot wheel.
This used a ditch or trough to bring a side stream of water from the stream that was providing the water,
often this involved a low dam with a head gate to regulate the water flow to the over shoot wheel.
An over shoot wheel was more consistent in the power it produced as the torque was determined by the wheels diameter
and the bucket design as the weight of the filled buckets was what turned the wheel.

5 gallons of potatoes were pulled today, I left all the healthy potato plants standing to pull next week. I had a surprise of a bucket of small onions underground where no green parts were visible. I’ll let the potatoes dry and skins harden before I wash them.
