18 going to 35.

Ken, beautiful snow pix. Congrats to your son on college and grant.

Buppies, continuing to pray for you and your wife. Thought about you good folks a lot while hiking yesterday. We eventually moved my wife's mother to the Memory Care unit of her Assisted Living community. It was very nice, with caring folks giving 7/24 care in a part of the building that was locked, for their safety. My wife visited multiple times a week and even stayed overnight a few times. When I visited, I was happy to see the care provided...these folks were heroines to me.

Kyle, beautiful church, nicely decorated for the season.

Sodamo, congrats on the nice new Ascent. Big smile on her face. Don't you love it when so many parts of a deal come together so smoothly? Creates loyalty. I feel loyalty needs a comeback.

Had a real nice Solstice hike yesterday with Della. Had studied trails needed for my goal of completing the Shenandoah 500 and was all packed early, ready to leave when I got a text from the National Park that they had closed the Skyland Drive due to the snow. So quickly found another trail where I could drive to the lower boundary and park...then hike up to the top of a mountain. Never got into more than an inch of snow, but the wind was very serious, and the temps stayed in the 20s. Della's first snow hike, and longest hike so far.

Good Morning,
Ct, 6 to start going to 20 but I doubt it !

David, good luck with the new vehicle, glad you could do a private sale on the one not being used ! More money in your pocket !

Billy nice Lucy of Della and hiking in the snow !

I’m off to the FD this morning to cook breakfast for the elves ! We will send 4 of our trucks out so 4 separate Santa’s ! Hopefully we don’t cross paths ! Better bundle up with these temps ! I think it’s cold here but then I listen to what Bill goes through and realize it’s not that bad here ! 😉

Hope all have a blessed day ! 🙏

Don, your Christmas tractor driving sounds like a lot of fun. What is your average speed?
I'm guessing 2mph. ??
3.1 to 3.3 mph
The people are very nice. After one ride a cell phone was found on the trailer and was returned to the owner. Strollers are left at the stops all the time if the family is making a round trip (20 minutes) and there have never been any reports of theft. Everyone is so nice.

Ron right, Fedor Church, I have put up those lights many times. Thanks for the pic Kyle.

David, nice Christmas gift with a fast deal.

House temp is staying at 69˚ through the night and only requires a one hour central heater session in the morning. Water temp 58˚.

Good morning! 49˚F heading to the mid 60s, S wind, partly cloudy.
Should be another good day at the farm this afternoon. Yesterday they were irrigating the newly planted tulips for the new Tulip Festival in February which will also be the month of the Baby Animal Festival. They still have not thought of a Festival for January.

good morning, colder 20 this morning when I got up

Stoked the wood fire, opened up for the air, The mini split backed off running a few minutes later. The oil furnace was running in the bed room area of the house. Electric bill was 120 dollars. The cold spell will last a few days only

Started to do some work in the shop yesterday on the vehicles but too cold and they don't fit into the heated part of the shop.
The heated vest is staying on a lot under the coat when outside but Cody enjoys cold weather it seems

Scott, do modern fire trucks have tank heaters?
I remember having to recirculate the tank water in very cold weather

I rarely wear an undershirt but today one is layered on, plus a heavy shirt and sweater.
25 high of day, going down to 7 tonight.
for this part of the world, that's mighty cold.
"pipe busting" weather

Frits, I figure three electric heaters used intermittently, and today all going..., costs me about 50 bucks a month.
For three months. Just thinking that has to be cheaper than cranking up oil fired hot air system several more degrees.

when taking showers now I try to turn off the exhaust fan asap. Trying to keep some moisture in the house. When heater runs and runs
it just gets drier in here. Nothing better than a steamer hissing softly on top of a wood stove.

Good morning, the low is -20 and going to a high of 13°F. Zero wind. Sunny!
Our cold temperatures come from Alaska and the Northwest Territories.

I have spent 2 Christmases in Florida, one in 1955 and one in 1973. Neither one felt like Christmas. I wasn't freezing my 'nads off.
When the forecast temperatures get down to -40 or so, then I will agree that it is cold.

I was best man at a friends wedding in Northern Alberta in 1981, they got married in February. The day they picked me up at Calgary airport it was warm down there. The Chinook winds had warmed the area up, but as we went farther north the colder it got. We got to Westlock, AB and on the day I arrived there it was the warmest it had been in two weeks...-45°F. Westlock is northwest of Edmonton.
All the time I was there every night we would watch the news and see that Toronto was getting buried in snow. I knew when I got back to the city I would be put to work on snow removal, so I slept on the plane. Sure enough, the first road grader that came in, I went out in.

One thing is for sure, I will NOT be going outside today sans clothes.

Have am safe day all

23 heading to 33 this AM and the rest of the day. Cold and dry, hopefully the wind will be less than yesterday.

Awakened this AM at 2AM due to a chirping fire alarm. Didn't we just talk about this? Must be a defective battery as it was replace a month or so ago. Weird. Nothing like finding a ladder or chair at 2AM. The chair was found, don't recall where the house ladder went. LOL.

Way behind on morning chores, probably hammer time for the water troughs. So have got to get moving. Don't know what plans are for today, will take it as it comes.

Hope all can get in a day of rest. Be safe.

Good morning.
Just aboot 8am here.
We are sitting at 10F and reaching 14F this afternoon.
2-3 days of the coldest so far this year. warming up as the week goes along.
Going to reach lofty heights of 35F but the nights will only drop to just below freezing.
The Christmas people might get their white holiday.
Where I am, close to the lake, we have about 2-4 inches at most on the ground and nothing really called for.
In the Niagara Falls area, about 15-20 minute ride, a friend said they have 8+ inches.
The modest warming shouldn't affect it too much.
Have a nice celebration, don't be too disappointed with your new socks.

don't normally heat the bedroom side of the house except when very cold when the heat drifting in from the living area is not enough.. The oil furnace in the basement can also burn wood or coal. Tried to burn coal but wife was allergic to it so had to stop that. But if we have a sustained cold spell we will burn wood and it can take some big pieces with the large fire box and no need to start the fire since running it on oil for a short while puts the wood on fire. It eats lots of wood though

Are Amazon, FedX and UPS delivery people unable to read. Amazon sent this photo and statement that package was delivered to back porch.
...
We gave up on giving directions.

The way our houses sits to the driveways, four doors are visible for drop off points. The USPS people are the only ones consistent enough to drop off at an outbuilding not the houses. LOL.

It's like a treasure hunt when something gets delivered....where is it?

Morning to all;
A nippy 0F this morning, forecast calling for a high of 14 today and getting down -4F tonight, then a slow warmup to above freezing by next Sunday. Going to be a cold spell. Coal insert rolling out some good heat and the oil boiler backing it up good when needed. Mini-splits been out of service for a while now.

Stay safe and warm

Good Morning!!!! 51F @ 5:30AM. Overcast. Expect mist and reduced visibilities at times. High 68F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.
Weather was sure nice yesterday. Mostly sunny and mild temps, got my buddy's dog walked and helped with a little electrical repair. Went grocery shopping for the Christmas trip; nobody's gonna go hungry during our stay.

When I was caring for my parents in their last days, Buppies, there were elder care and dementia help options through their county. Some were volunteer, some had fees but were subsidized and were very affordable. I made the first connection through a social worker during one of the many hospital stays, but you may find them with a google search for "elder care dementia", adding your county and state to the search criteria. My heart goes out to you, and I hope you can find the help you need to help you through these most difficult times.

Sounds like an eventful if not complicated day, David, and most unusual considering it was a car deal. Congrats!

Hope everyone stays warm and enjoys the rest of their weekend!

Honda needed oil change, but couldn't get the plug out. using a 6 pt, but it's still slipping off, and hard to get under to get good leverage.
Can we anticipate another epic plug problem?
maybe, but I can also go to a lube place and have them do it. Although I really would like a new plug, so will probably do it myself. Need to get the front end up some so I can get under it, then will try an impact on it. Did order a twist socket set.
How about putting in some type of EZ or Fumoto oil drain plug?
means the rest of the house can get colder. Which it sure will tonight. I bet it will be 63 or 64 out in living room tomorrow morning.
Gad - 64 is what I heat the house up to! When I got up this morning it was just above 53!

Wanted to make sure that I got the blacktop exposed before the traffic packed it into ice. Turns out there was already ice under the snow. But the sun and dry air took care of that after a while. Son had multiple visitors helping him move.

Good to see all that insulation at work, and keeping the snow on the roof of the old folks home.

Zoe was pretty excited about the stream of new people coming and going, especially the ones that brought dogs. I have to admit it is interesting being a neighbor to the house that I built many years ago. But so far we really like the old folks home. Especially the radiant heat and fireplace.

No defined plan for today. I want to spend some time with the new welder, I still have stuff to sort through in the house, and need to continue to clean up in the shop, as some of my treasure from the house is landing there.
I’ve got a check from the Oddfellows Lodge to deliver to a nearby food pantry, but not sure if they will be there today.

Also thinking about flying the little plane to lunch somewhere. Be interesting to see what the day brings.
