Remember that Barred Owl on the ground photo I posted recently...that same bird had been back sitting on the same branch of a tree 20 feet from the house for 3 mornings...probably more, but I've seen it around 5am each time. There are some vole holes nearby due to the bird feeders...hope it is catching them.

I had a "tractor experience" yesterday. Decided that since the highway department had cleared so much of the tree limbs and sapling/brush on their right of way this summer, that it was a good time for me to clear my side along the old horse pasture fence. So, tractor, chain saw, loppers and grapple were employed. I had 5 big piles on my side to grapple, but once cleared, I noticed that they had missed some saplings on their side...mostly loblollies and cedars. So, I climbed the fence and tackled that side...one big pile to grapple.

Drove down the highway but had to cross a small dry ditch to get to the pile...got across it, but couldn't get back...tried every angle, but always ended with a back wheel off the ground, and therefore high pucker factor. So, my tractor is parked across the ditch on our side of the road as my wife comes home from 3 days of babysitting our DIL and wondering what's up. Meanwhile I've walked up to the barn and retrieved a 3 foot cedar log/9 inch diameter to place in the ditch and she sees me walking back toward the road. Finally, success.

I know there are gizmos to tell you your tilt angle, and I probably would have been in the red. No more ditch crossing for me. I still have more to clear, though.
Could be interesting if owl hands around this winter.

No pictures to share delimar. :(

Oversized truck load hit the underside of bridge on I70, closing the EastBound bridge on I70. Traffic nightmare, as all traffic is forced off, have to do a uturn at a light, then head back on the other side. this is bringing traffic up near me, which has all the small town lights all backed up.

Nope Ken, the basement does NOT flood.
That's a surprise, but maybe you have less rain or better soils? We average about 1" of rain per week in an area with clay soil. Nearly every house I've ever lived in has been a very old house, and always the same story, seller claims basement floods whenever it rains. And in each one, I've simply fixed the gutters and extended downspout dumps farther from house, and then had a dry basement.

We also don't have snow guards on the roof.
Metal roof with no snow guards, and we'd be losing our gutters around here, too. My house had only one double-row of snow guards about 1/3 the way up on the metal roof, and several had been sheered off when I moved in. I hired a roofer to install a second double-row 2/3 of the way up, and they said, "let's just re-attach the broken ones and see if they hold." They didn't even last one winter, I had him back out the following summer to fix them again, and then attach another double row farther up.

Good (Thursday) morning. Overnight Low of 7.0C and it's presently 23.6C, fairly clear with a steady breeze.

Yesterday's trip 'into town' was successful, including a visit to the hardware store = there was a project in the Church vestry that needed 'seeing to'. That's what I did during the arvo. But first, I remembered to bring a spray can of lanolin to maintain the locks & hinges of the Church Hall. Seeing as I was there, I also knocked on the Rectory door and sprayed all of theirs too.

So today I reckon I'll simply enjoy the day and get a wee bit of dhobi done.

That's about it, take care all.

I used to do anode maintenance on the water heater. The first time I had to haul a 3/4" impact wrench up to get the anode out. After that it went a bit better, but the anodes were going in about eight months and that got old pretty quickly. So, I quit swapping anodes.

I bought a powered anode (Cerro-Tec, now available on Amazon), and it's going on towards fifteen years.

Our water heater doesn't accumulate sediment, but if yours does, I would recommend replacing the cheapo drain valve with a higher quality brass gate valve. I've had a couple of the cheapo ones fail to seal in the past after a single use.

Today is gutter day, with some of the outbuildings getting new gutters with stainless steel mesh screens (wildfire (WUI) requirement now, and no more leaf blowing gutters for me, yay!).

FWIW: I noticed yesterday that the stainless steel mesh easyon gutter guards happen to be on sale at our local Costco, 20% off, but for a package with 36' instead of 24'. They work well here, but at some point if your local rainfall rate gets too intense, water is going to sail across the screens, so it's not perfect.

All the best,

Peter
I have the screen mesh gutter guards on my gutters, I will be taking them off. The pine needles stick in them and then hold on to the leaves. Plus the pine needles are getting washed back up under the drip edge so they can wick water up into the rood edge :(
Going to remove them and then look for a larger down spout opening. Between the pines, oaks and maples it a royal pain.
