Goodbye Truck

We all have our breaking point. Turns out mine was around $2.50/gallon. That's when I started carpooling. With gas around $3/gallon and an 85 mile/day commute, I figure I'm saving about $75/month by carpooling, just in gas. That doesn't include tires, oil changes, etc., etc., etc. I drive a '99 lumina and get around 30 mpg. I gave up driving my truck to work a loooong time ago. Now it's strictly a 'farm' truck.

I've never been confused for a treehugger, but it sure makes me feel good to know that I'm doing my own little part to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. If we didn't need all this oil do you think there's any chance we'd be sending our boys over to Iraq to die? If we could supply our own oil needs the whole middle east would be left to rot.

I commute 120 miles a day, and the gas was killing me and I figured it would go higher given all the stuff going on you know where.

Alan, I don't know but one person who commutes further than me and he drives from Waco to DFW Airport every day. Whew! My trip is 140 miles round trip from Sunset to Grapevine and back.

My old Dodge gets almost 22 mpg average. Roughly, that means I spend $450 per month just on fuel. I keep wanting to make this truck a farm truck and get another vehicle, but this darn thing is paid for and I just can't justify having a car payment or laying out that much cash for a new vehicle. If I bought a VW Jetta or other vehicle that doubled my mileage, I'd only be saving $225 in fuel and probably spending that much extra on insurance and maintenance.

For those occasions where I need a nicer or newer vehicle, I'm close to the airport where I have lots of choice in rental cars.

I just like my old dirty diesel and feel really comfortable with it because I know it's "aches and pains" almost as well as I know my own. I'm pretty darn good at fixing what breaks on it too. Fuel will have to go to $5 per gallon or higher before I'll really consider trading. Between now and then, if I see a great deal on a decent VW diesel, I may pay cash for it and just see how it works out. Until I do, I'll save my money for tractor toys.:D
