Yup, we're talking pocket gophers and I'm ruling out poisons because of the dog. Appreciate everyone's feedback. Thanks much. I'm new at this farm business so I'm happy to be in the company of you veterans. I'm thinking I'm going to have to resign myself to a long battle and start with traps and work from there.

The poison in the gopher will not harm the dog ... just not enough in the gopher ... use a gopher plow the gopher will follow the tunnel and die in the ground anyway and a dog will never know he's under ground. I have been plowing them for years ... I have 2 top notch dogs and 3 great cats ... have yet to even see them sick.

We've been battling the little devils for years now.
Poison is the best way to remove the most the fastest. However it is not an option for us due to dogs that may get ahold of a gopher that's been poisoned.
What we've found that works the best are the Victor Gopher traps.
We've got a couple of five gallon buckets filled with these traps, small garden shovels, tent stakes and survey flags.
You dig up a fresh mound to find the run or runs and place the traps in the run(s) and go about your business. Check on them every few hours. Sometimes the gopher will push the trap or bury it without getting caught.
If you use these traps be sure to tie a string on it then to a stake, we use the plastic tent stakes. We also use surveying flags pushed in right behind the traps to help keep them from being pushed out of the tunnel and so we can find the traps out in the field.

Again Gopher bait under ground plowed in with a gopher plow .. not enough in the gopher to harm a cat or a dog.

I have declared war on gophers for years ... use a gopher plow in the spring and again in the fall and they can be controlled ... problem is that neighbors don't do the same and you never rid yourself of them.

Carpet bombing. When they get going here, I feel like Bill Murry in Caddy Shack. The war begins.

What exactly is a gopher plow?

What exactly is a gopher plow?

This is it ... it plows a furrow about 12" deep ... a gopher will take the path of least resistance ... doesn't have to burrow his own tunnel he can just travel along and get fed to death underground

Also ... 30 lb bucket of bait is $99 ... I can do 100 acres with it. Start out by making 3 passes around the field about 30 feet apart then criss cross the field in a big X ... and finally give the areas with visable gopher mounds a little extra.

Mole Traps and Gopher Traps | Get Rid of Moles and Gophers
The "Gophinator" gopher trap. It's all stainless steel and it loads WITHOUT your fingers anyway near the striking mechanism. I added braided wire lanyards with a loop to set a ground stake into for retrieval.
I use a 5/16" rod about the length of a walking cane to probe for the tunnel, when found I dig down with a shovel to expose the two tunnel openings, clean out with a trowel and set one trap into each tunnel, cover or not cover-whichever seems right at the time.
When the gopher is caught, it's an easy unload without having to actually touch the animal.
They will not rust-the store bought painted traps will finally rust out-throw away.
Excellent investment designed by an exterminator guy.
