Gopher Killer Question

Hey Guys,

I have a neighbor who has an Alfalfa field that has a lot of gophers, they also have them in the yard and they are moving over to our place some. He found this unit and was wondering if any of you have used this type unit or know anyone who has. Just looking for feedback if they are a good unit that does the job or not.

Looks like a interesting contraption. Would probably work pretty good. I hate to ask but how much does one cost?

We've got two kinds up here, the ground squirrels I call them and moles, they dig and leave a mound of pushed up dirt. We ride around on the ATV's and shoot all the ground squirrels we can. We have to work to get the moles, you've got to be a bit sneaky and a good shot to get them.

My wife has gotten good with juicy fruit gum at killing the moles.

I've never had to deal with the problems in a hay field but. My yard had an issue with the gophers and moles. I did as dieselpower suggested and shot the h#ll out of the little suckers. That worked for awhile but what I found to be a better tactic was grub killer. Put it down in the spring and kill all the grubs and food supply and the gophers went away. Only problem is you have to keep up on it every spring. Last year I got lazy and didn't put down grub killer and guess what. Grubs and moles/gophers came back . Just went and bought a big bag of grub killer last week and will put it on in later part of April.

The item posted above looks interesting, better than the propane blasting/ flame thrower I was looking at a few years ago. Let us know if you get it and how well it works, along with the price. Grub killer for my place is @ $150.00 a year.

Around here the ones that just push up a mound are called pocket gophers. I have an old thread somewhere on here of making my own 'budget' propane blaster. Works like a charm early in the spring when they start making long runs across the field. Wait until the last hole is open (it is working down there, usually around first and last light), back up a few mounds and blast in the direction of the open hole. Gets them every time. The ground having moisture is also a big help, holds the explosion in.

Rodenator and several other commercial brands out there. Run about $1500 and the process uses a fair amount of oxygen and a little propane. I did see a used one on Craigslist here for $500 a few weeks back. I don't know why you would ever want to sell one as the pocket gophers will move back in from surrounding areas.

I don't think the propane system or the PERC would work very well on the whistle pigs... they leave their burrows open and the gasses can escape. .22 is your best option here

I only have a few acres and had 3 or 4 spots that had pocket gophers. First time through I guesstimate an 80% kill ratio. This was after a few years of traps, poison etc. I have isolated them down to one ditch bank. This part of my hayfield was so infested when I started that between them digging it up and me blowing it up it almost looked like it had been tilled

gardens alive has a product called Beneficial Nematodes and they are used To Control Lawn Grubs. basically you throw a sponge that they give you into a bucket of water and then spray the area you need the grubs to be gone from. I have done it a couple of times and it has cut down on the skunks, and moles. I need to do it again in the garden but ill wait until next year.

What my wife does is we go to a fresh mound, take a stick and find the hole, then spread down the dirt, she then takes a plastic spoon on a wood dowel rod and puts two half's of a stick of juicy fruit gum (it's the only one they like) down the hole, she then takes some grass cuttings and puts over the hold then lightly put dirt back over the hole.

The moles eat the gum and they can't digest it so it kills them. She killed more moles with that approach than we did with guns. Her score for last year was 15 moles. We probably shot about 50 ground squirrels last year.

How do you know the mole ate the gum and it killed it? Just curious.

We'll when you have about 10 moles digging up a 100 yard area and you give them juicy fruit gum and they all dissapear it's a good shot that you got them. I had read of people using it on websites so we gave it a shot. They can't digest it and it blocks up their system and kills them. Check with your vet if a dog or cat eats some gum it can kill them. Hey, it works. My wife killed all but two on our property last year using this.
