Got a nice deal on a tandem dual trailer

My F250 with the V-10 was fine on the flat highway with that load of hay on it. Your truck would be ok also.
When I hit some bigger hills it was running pretty hard. I figure I was hauling 12,000 pounds of hay plus the trailer.

You're trailer should weigh around 7K. Truck probably weighs around 6500. So you were pulling 25,500. Good test for the V-10. I think they almost pull as good as a Diesel, just takes quite a few more rpms. :)

Hmmmm, how are three axles easier to maintain than two Chris?? No expert here, totally curious.

6 bearing sets versus 8, 6 tires versus 8, 6 brakes versus 8.

Biggest issue is working under the trailer when servicing the inner bearings, brakes, ect. Changing a flat on a inner with a loaded trailer is no fun along a interstate.

In the last two months a customer of mine has bought a 33' boat that is about 18,000#. When he pulled it home he borrowed a 2002 F250 7.3 diesel with 3.73 gears. The trip home was 150 miles then he borrowed the same truck to pull it to the lake, about 40 miles and launch it. After a few weeks it had some issues so the brought it to me with a borrowed 2004 2500 Duramax with 3.73 gears. While it was sitting at my house he bought a 2005 F350 V10 SRW with 4.10 gears. He pulled it back to the lake with it.

He claimed the 7.3 Powerstoke had the best pulling power but the Duramax did better at 60 mph with holding speed on the inclines, ect. He said he felt the V10 would beat both to 30 mph but there is a 7% grade going into the marina and he said both diesels would hold 40 mph while the V10 was down to 25 at the top.

That V10 has tons of grunt off the line but peters out on the grade. I venture to guess the V10 beats the diesels off the line due to the turbo lag.

My uncle routinely puts 25,000# behind his 2005 V10 F350 with 4.30 gears and pulls it 30 miles. Drinks the gas but does the job.

That trl. has 4 wheel ends which would be 4 sets of bearing's & 4 sets of brakes.

No sorry but you're wrong about working on the bearings, brakes, etc. on a tandem dual. For me they are just as easy to service as singles. No big deal. Servicing those items is why God invented Service Departments at trailer companies. :D

Now changing an inner tire on the side of the road? I'm hoping I never get that pleasure.

I am that service dept. I maintain over 50 trailers as a part time job.. This is why I no longer have mine.

Then you understand. Thankfully I'll never service the bearing, brakes, etc. Some guy turning a wrench in a Service Dept will do it for me.

That is one heck of a trailer and should last a life time or two.

Whether it's a single or dual wheel you still have to put a jack under the axle and remove 8 lugnuts. Remove the outer wheel and it's easy to get to the inner wheel. If you have a flat with a dual wheel trailer at least you have another wheel to hold the load until you can safely change it out.
