Love the CJ and a great looking bird.

Curious what kind of terrain you found him in, as well as weather you used a dog or not.

Around here the only birds we have are stocked, and they tend to run from the fields and hide in the surrounding brush. Makes it a total pain in the ***** even if you have a dog around to help. Typically my dog will flush them, and they just go deeper in the woods. Then when you do get on top of them they just sit and stare at you. It really takes the challenge out of it.

I am sure he was a stocky as well because its very close to area they release in, which is open low land farm country, bordering a large swamp, corn and soy bean fields, some wood patches, and draws between the fields.

I did bag the feathers and took them down to the local fish and gun shop and gave them to the new owner thinking he would know someone who tied flies, he was very appreciate, cut me a good break on 5 transfers last month@80.00, so he was who I thought of right away, got about 80 % of them, I made sure to get as many of the neck feathers as I could as well.

I almost forgot to mention, no dogs, we had a couple growing up, but often times the day ended short cause they like to sniff around #2 double spring leg holds, fortunately, they never broke anything, but it always put and end to the day. Pretty sure I would be much drier and a little less tired if I had a good dog or two.

Nice job! I too love the 16 ga but shoot a Remington 1100. Our season is 11-8. Can't wait!

I thought you were supposed to "age" birds like that? i.e., hang them from the neck on a string until they fall to the ground...:D

Nice bird!

Been fifty years since I downed a Pheasant. Did it with a side by side 16. Only identification on the gun was Krupp stamped on the inards.

Nice birds. I used to hunt pheasant up in Kansas, but a 20 ga. was a bit light for the kind of shooting we did. We used 12 ga. magnum #5's, copper clad shot. They are tough old birds, and it was rare to get a close shot, especially hunting the corn rows where they could run like a rabbit. We would occasionally hunt out a corner of a pasture that had some over grown fence rows, and that could yield some exciting close in shooting. I guess the best part was suppertime when we fried up a few of the birds. There is nothing in the game world any better than pheasant, although quail runs a close second.

FWIW, we found the #5 magnum, copper clad to be excellent for the long shots; cut down on cripples tremendously, because they penetrated so much better. One of our group loaded the shells; if I recall correctly, you couldn't buy commercially loaded copper clad shotgun shells at that time.
