HD on the other hand, like any "classic", the fewer the miles/hrs, the more it's worth.
Your maintaining it's value just by letting it sit marking it's spot... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)</font>

Bingo! Ha, get this; my dad called this morning and told me that he was cleaning up the oil that leaked out (duh) on his floor and decided to take it for a spin. I suppose he screwed with it for an hour or so and got it running and took it out for a ride. He said it ran great, but was asking me if it didn't have a rear view mirror on it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'd used locktite on it, but it must not have worked. Maybe I'll just weld the dang thing on! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Oh yeah, HGM, what's a "new one"? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

First HD was a 77 lowrider (superglide), my current is a 86 TourGlide with well over 100,000 miles (I've broke more speedo cables than I care to think about). Still runs great and it's been in 43 states! If I had to tell the best stories I'd be here all day...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!

WARNING, This is not a pleasant story.

I have a rather depressing one. My cousin was a deputy sheriff in Maricopa Co. Arizona. He rode his Harley as much as he could and was riding it to work one day. As he was coming up to a curve a drunk driver tried to pass someone on the curve and my cousin was forced into the guardrail. His right leg was so mangled that they had to amputate it. He also had numerous other permanent injuries that left him pretty much disabled. He started to drink and do drugs trying to kill the pain, and after a time he moved to Florida where his family couldn't pester him about his lifestyle. His depression got worse and he eventually put his gun to his head and ended it all. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I should say that I'm not opposed to motorcycles in any way, although I don't have one. I'm just relating my most relevant Harley story.

Not sure what you are trying to say Mike.

I used to have a couple of quarts of Indian oil, but can't find them now. Back then, I ran straight 60-weight Aeroshell non-detergent aircraft oil in my Indians; now I just use Mobil 1 15w-40 like most everything else.

Attached is a photo of one of my Indians from back then, a '42 Chief that I bobbed.

Pete,
At the risk of trying to put words in Mike's mouth, I think he meant

"good ole Indian..."

The Harley rider I was thinking of was my next door neighbor. He was a working stiff who worked his way up through the ranks to management. A great big guy with a pony tail. I don't know how he kept that tail, it's usually the first thing to go when you get promoted. He had a real cute little woman who kept him on a pretty tight leash. The world would be chaos if it weren't for all the ladies keeping us on pretty tight leashes. Just ask W if you don't believe me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Anyway my neighbor must have been doing pretty well cause one day He rode in on a gorgeous shiny black Harley I'm not sure which one it was maybe a fat boy but it sounded like an earthquake. Well his caddy went to live out in the rain when the Harley came home. His wife let him ride it a couple of times a week. He would come out ready to ride. Really nice leathers and a pot that matched the bike and special rider glasses. His wife would watch him check the washer fluid or what ever and he would get the bike warmed up. Then she would let him go. He would be gone for half an hour. He'd ride in with the bread or milk or whatever. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, I get it now... getting a little slow at my age.

RE: BSA - my first street bike was a '49 BSA 500cc single. Bought it out of a snow bank in a guy's back yard for $150. Freed up the piston, put oil and gas in it, and it ran. That thing would only do about 65 mph without shaking your fillings out, but it was a torque monster. I used to win bets by starting out from a dead stop at the bottom of a fairly steep hill in 4th gear, and chug-chug-chug up the hill. When it would start, that is - Lucas magdyno was incredibly temperamental, and the points would fit upside down or backwards! Once, when riding home from work at night on a mountain road, it lost all lights. Fortunately, there was a moon and I knew the road well. And the clutch needed adjusting at least once a week.

I traded that bike off towards my first Indian, but for all its foibles I wish I still had it now, it was fun.
