Lots of offense taken here. Lots of hard feelings too. Just send me that trailer and I will be all better. My truck can only pull it empty, but I'll pull it around just to show it off until I get a bigger truck. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All seriousness aside, I learned a lot from this thread, and I believe some others made the same comment. Since there was no vile personal attacks, it was worth it. We're all adults and must accept disagreements constructively, not as personal attacks.

Yawn. Need.. more ... coffee...

There are many ways one can try to explain that of which is not easy to explain. With my understanding of how a WD hitch and all explaination that I have seen, I can understand where they have come from. But I guess a picture is worth a thousand words, even if the picture in all reality shows what should not be done /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I had found on CountryByNet where Bird has referenced this picture. I just happened to be working with a guy that had a copy of this today... Just after I saw this post.

Yep, I'm a licensed engineer as well. Was into structural but now more site development type stuff.

I had forgotten about this thread. All kinds of excitement. I still recommend that you find the ratings of your equipment and follow them. On my factory equipped tow vehicle, a W/D hitch is required if over 500 lbs of tongue weight. Just the way it is, the load bearing style of hitch shown in your early posts is not WD so is not appropriate for pulling a 5000 lb or heavier trailer with my pickup. Most pickups are similarly equipped and all should have ratings posted on them somewhere.

Then there are all the bonus benefits of using WD including some safety improvements like positive front axle loading.

I think and hope we all agree that the truck/hitch/trailer combo should all work together as a system and no one part of it should be working beyond the listed ratings. If you ignore the ratings, well, you deserve what you get.

And I hope I'm not the one (or anyone else) who is following you when your load shifts and starts to sway causing a jackknife because you didn't take the appropriate measures to be safe !!!

If you though this thread was long, that chain vs. strap thread will amaze you.

Hello Egon. Your suggestion about parking your truck so as to make the back of your trailer closer to the ground is exactly what I ty to do when loading / unloading my tractor with the backhoe on it. I always bring a few blocks of wood to drive the rear wheels of my truck on for just that purpose. Just 3 or 4 inches under the rear wheels of the truck makes quite a difference.

IMO almost 100% of those participating in this forum are safer, more informed and more aware of what to look for, check, and more informed about numerical calculations than 95% of the towing public.

That is great for us but bad for those who load and go without thinking.

I like people who think, even if they sometimes say the same thing without knowing it. I wish there were more of us on the road.

My tractor, BH, BB and other related implements were delivered last week on a shaky old rusty twin 3500 trailer with aftermarket welded plate panels around perimiter. two straps. none on implements. Made it but, scary to look at. Driver said he loads and transfers much larger units. Basically any tractor that will fit on the trailer (width), he will carry. Bragged about the twin 3500's, and the back yard welding job. Didnt say a word to him. Whew!

Thanks.
