It is on dry land (as you guessed). We brought the truck out so we would get the loader back to our heated shop as quickly as possible before everything froze solid.

Interesting how they ran the track-hoe into the water up to the tracks. I guess everything up there has a rock bottom. Down here it's mud.

I wonder if the FEL had been in a lowered but not float postion it would have distributed the weight of the tractor once the front wheels broke through and prevented the tractor from sinking? Maybe you could even self rescue by lowering the FEL to raise the front wheels and drive backwards using traction from the rear wheels. Now that would have been a cool sight.

Several people got wet. I believe the front window remained, but when the loader sank, the water pressure wouldn't allow the door to open, so one of my superintendents got a ride in one of the back hoe buckets, smashed the side window of the loader, and got him out. You see, even if someone does something really stupid, there's still the moral side to things where you should go in and rescue them.

so what, you take it home, change the fluids send it back out? or was it hydrolocked?

We took it back to our shop in Calgary, let it thaw out, drained all the oils in the engine/transmission/diff's etc. It was running again by noon the following day, however I was concerned with the engine (I don't think for a minute that he shut it down before sinking). We did some testing, and so far it has been operating all season without any problems. There was also some minor cosmetic work done as well as the broken windows were chenged.

My stuck story was not "mine" luckily. Back in the early 80's I worked for a landscaper and one of our accounts was next to a wooded lot that sloped down to a seasonal stream bottom. It was always wet down there in the spring but usually dried up pretty well in the late summer & fall. Well, the lot sold and they cut a lot of the trees and then went in with a big old Cat Dozer to remove the stumps and do a rough grade. For some reason he got quite a ways down the slope despite a wetter than usual fall. He buried the thing about 1/2 way up the engine cowling but the operator was smart enough to realize he was losing the battle and shut it down before it swallowed any of the muck. They left it there untill it dried out enough to get an excavator close enough to dig it out. Then they started her up and drove her up the ramp they made with the excavator! I'm sure they ended up having to rebuild the bottom end but it was worth a few yucks to look over in the field and see the top of that dozer sticking out of the high grass.
