Thanks for letting me know. We love our kids and don't want them getting lost or worse.

We used the invisible fence years ago on a pair of GSDs. Their fur is very thick around the neck and had to shave and use the longer prongs. As mentioned by others they will run through if motivated. We had 4' chain link, too but they jumped that like a low hurdle.

We will be fencing with welded wire on the lower 4-5 ft and barbed strands above. One key is to avoid having them run the place unsupervised. We have a large dog run that will be attached to the house for when we cannot be with them. Bored dogs get into big trouble. GSDs are too smart sometimes.

We are expecting an Aussie pup this year.
I’ve been doing a lot of research in the Spot On GPS system.
it’s not cheap but appears well reviewed.
One feature I like is the ability to have multiple “yards”.

We currently have 2 homes.
One suburban sized .25ish acres
The farm is 12 acres.

I strongly urge you to reconsider the barbed wire on top. If you think they might go over the lower tier put another layer of two strand on top. Barbed wire is nasty stuff, and could really do some damage if a dog tried to go over the top.

We had a German shepherd that figured out how to leap between two strands of barbed wire, about eight inches apart.

How did we figure it out you ask? Well we found an entire fresh deer leg, femur to hoof, on the deck and a very proud dog. Close inspection of the only part of the yard not enclosed by 6' chain link revealed a few, only three or four, dog hairs on two of the barbs. She managed to cleanly jump through the barbed wire both ways; one direction was an uphill jump of about three and a half feet, from an inclined slope. How she maneuvered the leg through the strands mid jump I don't know. We couldn't find a scratch or a mark on the dog top or bottom.

Motivated animals can do pretty amazing things.

All the best,

Peter

Electric fence is much more effective. One touch and they'll never jump the fence again.

A good friend had two Siberian Huskies and about 20 acres. He installed a buried wire fencer around three acres. Each dog got a collar.

It worked just great. EXCEPT - when the dogs saw something they wanted to chase. It was mainly all the local deer that brought them over this wire fencer thing.

He was all the time out and about. Bringing these two dogs back home.

Thanks. The barbed wire is more to discourage 2-legged critters from coming in. Nothing is going to stop a determined person or GSD (at least in my experience). The best way to keep a dog inside fencing is to limit the time they have to puzzle out a solution. If the dogs wander the property unsupervised, they will get into a lot more mischief than if you are with them. Smart dogs get bored and bored dogs get into trouble. We will normally have them in the house with dog door access from laundry room to outdoor kennel. Where the property has fencing now is just 3 or 4 strands of barbed...much of it is overgrown.

I'll keep looking into other options. We are somewhat limited by the easements, too.

Years ago we had 2 GSD in Wisconsin. When weather was appropriate, we would put them in the kennel to play. I am pretty sure they had an escape committee a la Hogan's Heroes. The worst was when neighbors decided to shoot off fireworks on random days. Drove the dogs nuts. They almost chewed their way out. Not good for their teeth. We always kept them indoors for things like July 4th. It took a lot a restraint for me to not just let them out to deal with whomever was shooting the fireworks. (in town, 100% illegal)

I always had good luck with a plain old electric fence with two strands of poly wire.
Now we have one of the buried wire ones, it is working good for us.
It is supposed to not tone or correct if the dog gets past it and tries to return.
