I also question people who say the get 20 plus mpg after deletes. I owned a early 2004 Dodge with a Cummins. Reading the Cummins forums it was suppose to be one of the best for mileage. It had an Edge chip on it. There was nothing to delete, it had no EGR, no catalytic converter, no DPF, no DEF. I don’t think I ever got 20 mpg, maybe 18 mpg a few times. Towing mileages was solid, like 16 mpg towing a car trailer with a 4000 pound car on it but I also drove slower when towing.

I do see people getting a couple mpg better after deletes, but I’m still not a fan of it.
I would question the person who did the delete and most likely didn’t know what they were doing with the tuning.
As I said many purchased a system and installed it. Did no real tuning, ignored the advice of real tuners, then preached how great it was and how much power and MPG they were getting.
I remember one particular truck meet when a well known tuner offered to pay the cost of any dyno run that attained the claimed power output of a bunch of guys that were preaching how great thier trucks ran with deletes and off the shelf tunes.
It was a funny site to see not one of those trucks made the owners claimed numbers and a few actually made less power than stock.
Knowing the foolishness that goes on in the automotive world I understand why many don’t believe some can actually get real gains.

Really have to wonder why anyone would need more than a 300HP Diesel engine, not to mention 400HP or 500HP for in an average diesel truck
Manhood compensation?
Don’t tell me it’s for “towing a heavy trailer”, either....My ‘20 Ram Cummins (standard output) pulls 44,000lbs, bone stock wherever I want with ease.

I probably wasn’t clear in my earlier post, my 04 Dodge didn’t have EGR, converter, DPF or DEF from the factory, it wasn’t deleted. The Edge chip I had on it was a very early model. It was a 4 position chip, about the size of a wallet, but no switch. You had to crack open the case, about the size of a thin wallet, and move these little jumpers around, they looked like little transistors, to change the power setting. I played with it one day, it worked, very noticeable power increase but most of it just seemed to make the power come on sooner off the line.

My ‘20 Ram DPF appears to be wrapped in some sort of foil insulation.

I believe your Ram has the CP4 fuel pump.

If you were on the fence about an extended warranty, I'd give it some serious thought

I've never bought one in my life but if I had a 2020 Ram with a CP4, I would seriously think about it

You might never have a probem with it. I hope you don't, but the Bosch CP4 Injector Pump is known for problems.

Ram only did it for '19 and '20 AFAIK

If you decide to do it, shop, shop hard, shop really hard.

Well not to rain on a parade, but I like OHV cam in block engines- especially for muscle cars or trucks
Ford even went back to this design in their "new" 7.3 liter truck engine.
Also in the early 1960's I cannot blame GM for toning things down- they were about to be sued by the Federal Gobomint for gaining to much of the US auto sales market share- which brought the under 400 cube in intermidiates and pulled all GM vehicles from racing. so their popularity and racing success led to almost an anti trust breakup..
Torque is measured while horsepower is calculated.
imo most OHC engines have less low end torque in general but top end HP they shine.

and mileage - If 14.7 to 1 had not been pretty much standardized even shade tree mechanics can get some decent mileage.

here's a 130k miles 1999 Vette with a modified fuel map and tune breaking 40 MPG on the hiway

I had a 99 Vette with a six speed that I daily drove for spring, summer and fall.

22-24 mpg was normal, I think I seen as high as 26 mpg.

Loved that car, I could set off car alarms downshifting thru any parking lot. 🇺🇸

Already extended it.
Still cheaper than the other 2 choices-even with extended warranty
And I got more towing capacity and like the Cummins/Aisin a lot.
The CP-4 is a raging debate on truck forums, otherwise known as "the glitter bomb". Looks like about a 5% failure rate.
Still talk that Stelantis will replace them all, but I kind of doubt it...
Although I dont like it, other manufacturers, including Ford, used the CP-4.
We shall see.....

Well my old truck was deleted and made a bit over 570 HP, before that I would have agreed with your sentiment. That truck simply put changed my mind on what the extra HP and torque was good for besides manhood compensation.
Yes I pulled some serious wieght with stock before that but until you have tried it you shouldn’t knock it!
Also one should consider location, frequency of pulling loads and the amount of time one spends being a hinderence to other traffic, along with who is driving! Little miss daisy drivers will never understand and look at the torque output of that newer ram compared to one of the older ones. Why do you think they stepped up thier game to match the levels tunners were attaining without I’ll effects for years before.

In short you should be thanking those tunners/kids wanting to tinker and men trying to compensate for thier manhood for showing the manufacturer what we wanted and needed before you dropped down your hard earned cash.

By the way my new ram which is completely stock by comparison still isn’t up to the same level as my old truck was. They upped the torque but it just doesn’t have what the old girl had and if it were possible I would trade even up for the old one back.

Gotta say I wouldn’t be sad if they got tossed in the pen for a few years and tagged with a felony conviction on their records. Being stupid should come with a price.
There's a thumbs up. I wish there was a thumbs down. More important things to be spending public money on.

Yeah, but if we are both being completely honest, we both KNOW trucks tuned to make double their power are likely to experience failures when towing heavy. The EGTs in those trucks when put under load are astronomical and cant be sustained for much longer than a "full-pull" at the truck pulls. Even if they could they must also be equipped with an overbuilt transmission or clutch to handle that level of power.
Its good for fun, but impractical for anyone unless you want a melted turbo, hole in a piston or shredded transmission.

If all you want to look at is HP/TQ on a dyno, fine-you win, but I bet my stock Cummins will last 5-10 times longer than a bombed truck once we hook 30,000 pounds to it and haul it up hills for a few years.
Anything more than 400HP in a diesel from the manufacturer could rarely be utilized. Its just for bragging rights and as I said before, manhood compensation. Now we both know we pretty much have to take what the manufacturer gives us *stock*, but adding more power to that is stupid.
