Another thing I remember is that during the Vietnam War, C5 Galaxy aircraft would land at our airport, and they'd load dozens of Jeeps onto them at a time. This was a fairly common occurrence. I remember seeing up to four C5's at the airport at the same time.

I also remember seeing hundreds of Huey helicopters flying over my house with guns mounted. Always heading east to west. Many times there were groups of several dozen. From what I recall, they were getting the pilots flight training, cross country navigation, etc... they'd stop here overnight. It was incredibly loud and quit the sight. We could hear them coming for miles. I'll never forget that sight and sound.

The medical choppers were nonstop to Oak Knoll Navy Hospital with wounded and sometimes we would hear radio communication over the school PA system.

No trace of the hospital remains due to base closing...

"For those that may not know, M=military version while CJ = civilian jeep." I did know that.

Me neither !

Edit I also know you meant "NOT KNOW"that.

I had a '42 former military Jeep when I was a kid in high school and learned a ton both using it and working on it, about a 50/50 proposition with a dumb kid. The thing I remember most about the old military equipment was my oldest brothers telling about shoving so much of it overboard out in the middle of the ocean after the war was over. Everything from jeeps to bulldozers to cases of rifles and shotguns. He did liberate a .12 gauge semi auto and a model '97 pump with a 36" barrel that he was able to send home to our Dad.

Yes sad. The cost to bring them home plus US manufacturers were being protected from an influx of used trucks, jeeps, dozers, etc. that would slow the economic recovery and reduce jobs for returning servicemen.

I thought jay Leno did a good review on this old 68 Bronco although he souped this one up, a bit much I think, when theres no room for a heater thats to much. I had a 84 Bronco II and it would go great though snow.

Didn't those BroncoII's like to swap ends though. I hit a patch of slick mud on an otherwise frozen woods road one day and still don't know why it didn't turn turtle into the ditch. The only good thing was that nobody saw it happen.
Another time we were on a road which had just been brushed out and picked up a stick in the differential... when I pulled it out the seal came out with it. I got on the radio, told them where we were and went off to work. When we came back there was a different truck in it's place and they had towed the Bronco to the company garage. Later the mechanic said that if we'd tried to drive it home we never would have made it.
Then there was the time that we had a flat and the lug nuts were rusted on... we were on a spur off a side road off from another road... there was no way that we could describe where we were to anybody. I managed to turn 3 out, snapped the other two off and limped out of the woods that way. The next day the mechanic said they had the lug bolts fixed but had to wait for parts to fix the worn out rear brakes... we'd been saying they were bad for months but nobody believed us.
