My ex and her entire family worked for the govt in one form or the other, it was like a family business. In their case, i know exactly how it works. They are all living off the fat of the land.

The more govt employees, the larger that voting block and who in their right mind is gonna kill the goose that laid their golden egg.

When many of the most sought after jobs are in govt, imho, somethings very wrong!

What frosted me is taking a pay cut in exchange for benefits and it did not pan out as promised benefits evaporated with ownership changed... "Same Desk Rule" didn't apply as each employee technically had to apply and be hired with every change...

Isn't that some sort of legal requirement? I've run into that every time a company I was working at was sold, even though it was made clear that in most cases it was just a formality. I totally get it from an employer's standpoint...it allows them to get rid of "problem" employees without technically having to fire them...they just don't get an offer from the new owners.
Fortunately in my case, most times # of vacation eligible weeks were honored unless they exceeded what the new owners had in place (that never affected me).

Only way i would trust a pension plan. Too many companies in past would fire someone just before they were vested.

Yeah, I worked for a place once that had a rep for that...as you approach vesting date they either laid you off or made your life miserable so you'd quit.

Then again, most places I've worked were relatively small companies that didn't offer pensions to begin with, though 401K's were offered when they became available.

There are all kinds of companies out there.

One I worked for as a sales rep (fortune 500) would hire at low wage with sales quotas to earn U bonus.
Quotas were unreasonably high but I did manage to make it but as a result they fired me claiming I had disrupted the production schedule.

I had befriended the personnel manager who explained their policy.
He explained that they figured a sales rep job was the goal of many a young man and that replacement was so simple so why pay big $$'s'
Also each new rep would bust his energetic gut to make quota as would the next ones and so on with the company winning each time.
Added to that , the 'company car' was a gutless junk that should never been allowed on a road. (seat was actually propped with a 2 x 4).

Then came a 2 week training session.
I had to pay all expenses (including airfare) on my CC with them to repay on my expense acct claim.
They did reimburse 60 days later but some 25% short due to exchange rates at the time.
Another month and memos to get the exchange back.

Were I to name them you'd be flabbergasted.
Good old days?

Buy out worked out for me with my employer. My only beef was insurance out of pocket went up.

They honored my original hire on date. Similar paid vacation package so my five years prior was honored and I still got my extra week of vacation. I've since hit the 10 year mark a few years ago and got another week's vacation. Only thing that stinks is I gotta go 10 years before I qualify for the next weeks vacation.

Currently at 4 weeks paid vacation. I can roll one of those weeks over which I've done. So..... coming into 2021 I can take 5 weeks vacation if I want to. But will probably roll the one week and only use 4 of them. This way I save that extra week just in case.

I've found having maxed PTO helpful with Covid shutdown.

For several months was the only one working mornings and that was 5 hours per day... as the surgery was 100% shut down.

Having the time let me back fill to get my hours.

On the other hand many were happy with the boosted unemployment and thought that was a great deal...

Grandpa never heard of such a thing in the good ole days so no advice to offer.

Daughter in law and son were the only ones out of work. Son got 27 hrs a week and earned too much to qualify for unemployment.

Daughter in law made more on unemployment due to the $600 bonus.

Daughter, son in law, wife and I never got a day off. Son in law struggled to get his hours though due to being a mechanic for a dealership.

Today my company truck went into the shop to find out why the check engine light was on. I knew that it was fuel related because of a previous test. It also shuddered when I stepped on the gas, and you could smell the excess fuel coming out the tailpipe. It turns out that it needs new injectors. There was a recall on it, so although the truck is 4 years old with 108K+ miles on it, the repair bill is covered under warrantee.
That would never have happened back in the good ole days...

Your right, in the good ole days we'd have carburetors that last lot longer then fuel injection....:fishing:
