Grapple Bucket on 3720

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( Another use I am thinking of is using one of these grasping buckets to reach up, grab a dead branch and break it off by backing up the tractor or just by raising or lowering the FEL.

Any advice about which to get, the grapple or the 4 in 1 bucket? )</font>

The only reason to get a grapple is if you have to move very large trees around since a 4-in-1 bucket can pick up just about everything you throw at it up to about 12" across or so.

I have both the 4-in-1 and a grapple. The 4-in-1 bucket has three teeth on each side to help hold stuff when it clamps and is also fairly effective at cutting limbs from trees like you mentioned... you just clamp down and then rotate the bucket dump back and forth to get through the limb. You are limited to the reach of the bucket which is why I'm considering getting one of those hydro tree limb cutters since you get another 6' higher.

You would also be surprised at how much better a clean up job you can do with your dirt/rock piles with the 4-in-1 as opposed to a bucket alone. Buckets tend to just keep pushing that last bit around, but the 4-in-1 can close over top of the pile and get it all up. I would never live without one again and can't believe how I managed before.

The few times my grapple was used was when I was moving cut tree sections that where 18" to 24" across. So I would get the 4-in-1 unless you have to move things that large.

I went through this also before deciding to get an Anbo light duty grapple. I'll be using it for moving brush piles & down trees. The light 60" unit only weighs 440 pounds so I won't lose as much lifting capacity as heavier attachments. What does the 4 in 1 weigh?

I have the HD JD SS 72" Pro one which is 918lbs and has three teeth used to hold objects when closing... the 60" compact tractor one listed at http://www.wrlonginc.com/UJ2.htm shows 445lbs with only one small tooth at the bottom. I think under the options where it lists "Weld on teeth" is where you could add more for better gripping.

Farming, thanks for the link. I thought they weighed more than that. You make a good point about scooping up the last bit of a pile. How big of limbs are you able to cut off with the 4 in 1? Do you use the side or bottom edge? Can you clip off small 1-2" trees/brush even with the ground?

The size depends a lot on whether it is a hard or soft wood tree. I have probably taken off up to 5" dead limbs and up to 2-3" live ones. Some of the "bendy" woods just don't want to snap in half and those you have to twist back and forth with the dump function.

I typically use the side of the bucket to clamp since that is where you get the most leverage, but have taken small limbs off with the bottom edge. Yes, it could cut some of the small saplings at the ground, but I usually try to work them out, roots and all so I don't have to worry about them trying to come back up.

It would probably be easier to do this kind of work in the winter when the trees are hibernating and the limbs would be more brittle, but invariably I only get to it in mid summer when I have to push back the thorn bushes that are encroaching along the trails.

Those 4-1's look amazing Farming. I assume they make a JD quick tach model. How much are these things - 3K?

Mike,

Yes, they are $3000+ in most cases. I forget how much my neighbor paid for his for the 4320 he just bought, but it was in that range. It is REALLY nice. If I decide to keep my tractor, I will probably save up and get one myself. It really seems to broaden what one can do with the loader. He became so proficient with his, that he could move fallen branches and limbs from some property he was clearing without slowing down. I saw him lift and move a 50-60# 10' limb on the path to the property at about eight mph, without even slowing. The only problem is that his tractor waited at the dealership a LONG (no pun intended) time waiting for the 4:1. Apparently, the WR Long company are quite the craftsmen, but are not really into this production thing. He patiently waited, as he said they are so much better than others that it was worth the wait.

I spoke with the W. R. Long company and the suggested list price on the UJ2-60 4N1 bucket is $1746. This is the one they recommend for the 300cx loader. It weighs about 450 lbs. Three weeks estimated delivery.

The Root Rake Brush Grapple, the RBG2 for compact tractors, is $1795. Weighs 365 lbs.

I can order through my local John Deere dealer.

Does anyone know what kind of and the thickness of the steel they use?

What do you think of the limb clipper from wolff manufacturing?
