Grapple bucket vs 4-in-1 for clearing property

( The 4in1 might not be quite as efficient in moving brush but it will pick up logs and move them easily. )

Will the 4in1 pick up this log and carry it all the way to the burn pit without dropping it??

GrappleTBNa.jpg

How many trips with the 4in1 to move this brush pile to the burn pit??
How long to chip it with a DR Chipper??
(This load was not hand loaded. It was grabbed using the previously described method!)

If you mostly work dirt, get the 4in1! If you mostly work woods, you must get the Grapple Bucket! Or, as so aptly stated by MossRoad: "Oh, heck, I should just buy one of each and be done with it.

The biggest log I've moved was 13'' at the butt and 18 ft. long. Just lifting it caused instant pucker so I had to lift/drag it in reverse. It has a gentle curve in it and did leave an unusual trail with both ends dragging for 800 ft from where I fell it to where it now lies as part of the edgeing in our vegetable garden. So if you're trying to say that your log's bigger than my log no way!

Just wanted to get back with you helpful folks and update you on the status of my decision. After talking to the "minister of finance" -- i.e. missus -- I've agreed to try out the little Kubota B6000 that I already have before I "write it off" as incapable. I need to clear some "trails" into the lot so my brother can get the timber cut off it. I'll be doing that in a couple of weeks.

If I find that it won't do what I need, then it'll be a new PT-25 this fall, so I can deal with the brush from the timber cutting, and clear the route of the future driveway and septic system.... We're just trying to juggle so many expenses now with the new land purchase, and still facing driveway, site grading, and septic costs, while trying to get ready to start construction next spring...

Meanwhile, I found a rental place fairly close that allowed me to get hands-on exposure to a Power-Trac. I'm a believer now, even though I've never seen a grapple bucket or min-hoe firsthand!

No, what I suspected was that, when picking a log off the ground by its center and traveling, that the 4in1 may lose its grip more easily than the Grapple Bucket, and, therefore, may not be as safe!

Dragging a log is not a valid test of the best type of bucket! Any bucket can be used, or the MiniHoe, or the Potato Digger, or the Forks!! Actually, the heaviest log could be lifted and dragged using no attachment at all - just a chain on the adaptor plate!!!

An advantage of the Grapple Bucket is the ability to sieze a log between one rock tooth and one fang. Then the PT can be manuevered freely as the log pivots between these teeth!

looks to me like you're dragging that log! My point is simple, The 4in1 will do the job of clearing logs ( I'm doing it on my property ) When finished and should you wish to begin landscaping and general yardwork the 4in1 will then be a more useful tool...

Wanted to provide an update on the status of my PT buying decision... and ask a couple more questions.

As I stated above, I agreed to try the little Kubota on the initial clearing, which I've now done. While we got the job done, I was disappointed with its traction on this sloping terrain that's covered with leaves and pine needles. Quite often, especially with a load in the bucket or in reverse going uphill, I'd find one front tire spinning (open front differential) and one rear tire spinning, so I'd have to use diff-lock or the individual rear wheel brakes to regain traction. This certainly limits maneuverability around trees, tree stumps, etc. We added about a 150 lb chunk of log to the 285lb boxblade (in addition to already having loaded rear tires and 50 lb wheel weights), and that helped a lot. The traction was such a challenge that we moved what we could by hand, rather than risking getting the tractor stuck. The loader performed OK, using a chain and hooks, but certainly a grapple bucket would be much faster....

Bottom line is that I'm now seriously considering selling the Kubota, which I've only had a few months, and getting a PT 425 with grapple bucket. I've contacted Rich Rogers to see if he's seriously interested in selling his older one, since he posted that he's considering it, and he's less than an hour away -- he's supposed to make a final decision this week and let me know. I'd either need to buy a grapple bucket for it, or convert his small bucket to a grapple bucket.... If not, I'll need to convince the missus to spend the money for a new one. Luckily, I think I can get my money back out of the Kubota -- or at least close to it -- if I bring it back to New England and sell it to an individual, since PT doesn't take trade-ins /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif .

Before I take either of these steps though, I'd like your informed opinions on whether a PT 425 will handle these slopes -- especially in reverse -- since the clearing for the house is uphill from much of logs & brush to be moved. Here's more pictures that show the conditions I need to work in (forgive the text that I used to provide a progress report to the missus).

One additional question -- is the new PT 425s upgraded wheel motors such a significant enough difference to make a new PT that much more capable than an older one like Rich's -- especially for my needs on these slopes. I haven't seen the woods that Rich was working his in, so I can't compare, nor do I have "seat time" on PT in these kinds of conditions.

Given my needs, is it worth almost twice the cost (when you consider attachments and all) to buy a new one than to buy Rich's used one should he decide to sell? I don't want to end up in a situation where I'm dissatisfied with a used PT, and have to sell it, in order to get yet another piece of equipment.

Hello all, I haven't posted yet to this forum, but bought a PT422 last year and just love it. I do wish I would have got the 4in1 instead of the rock bucket. Also, I just noticed a price increase on the website.....I think it is starting today.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the info regarding PT price increase.
What projects have you been working on?

Thanks for the welcome, seems like a good bunch of people on this forum. I have used lots of info from everyone here and figure I should join in and contribute myself. I have over 150 hours on my PT 422....I mostly cut some grass, maintain some land and just have fun with little projects like an extra parking lot or clearing out some brush and planting trees. I was really glad I added the ball hitch like the one fellow did, cause I now tow a camper, a 6x10 trailer and other stuff around my place. I got to run, but I'll be doing some posting now that I finally joined in.

Wow. Looks like I bought just in time, since there was an $850 price increase on the PT422 package that I bought. Looks like about 6-10% across the board.
