Grass maintenance

/ Grass maintenance #21
On my place I have Giant Ragweed that will grow to 25 foot in a matter of weeks. I have to mow at least 4 times in the spring/summer to keep it at waist level.

The frequency of mowing depends on your goals and the type of vegetation you are trying to control.

That sounds ugly. 25 feet ragweed, everything is big in TX :laughing:
The OP didn't say where he lives, so I am shooting in the dark on that.
Dave.

If you look at the background in my profile pic you can see some examples of the smaller plants. These are young and growing in the shade of some trees, so they are less than 12 feet tall, mostly 8-10 foot examples.

Yeah, sorry - we are in central Indiana.
No worries on farm fields, the 10+ acres to the east (windward, generally) are solid woods. No real neighbors to speak of.

Sounds like I better get the rotary cutter and do some experimentation...

Thanks

I do my best to keep it cut well below that height. The first year I had the property I tried to maintain it with a poor old Yardman garden tractor. It got rainy and I could not cut until it was well over head high and my tractor ran up the stalks and tried to keep going up instead of forward. The stalks were already over an inch thick. It beat that poor mower to pieces.

I soon started hiring a guy to bush hog it. It was fine for a few years until he started to get too busy or was too shorthanded to come frequently. On his last trip to cut it took over 4 hours to cut through less than 2 acres and he over heated his tractor three times.

That was my impetus to buy my own tractor so I could mow before it hits 10 feet. I don't know which model tractor my hired guy was running, but my L3700SU has a lot more power than his did. He did tell me that if he were to do it again he was gonna bring his big blue, which took a much bigger truck and trailer.
