To finish off the sections i put up two moveable timber containing walls. This means that the waste can be built up and left for about 6 months before spreading on the veg or roses in the garden

first cut of grass in pit. It works very well and leaves emptying the bag very easy. Just have to be careful that u dont back too hard against the wheel stop or u could end up becoming compost yourself. Im pretty happy with the way things have gone and the whole experience has been very worthwhile. A neighbour is asking if ill build him one. Total cost was about 230 euro which aint too bad. Next project is the workshop so ill try get a post about that going. Cheers for your opinions anyway its nice that somebody thinks its good.

Thanks for sharing. It's an interesting aproach and technique. I kept wondering what your stores are like for buying lumber and material. Do you have a Home Depot type of place?

"i a going to try and make good compost with it "

For composting.. you need air.. and the compost is turned over at regular intervals to get air into the pile for the microbes.

"Composting microbes are aerobic -- they can't do their work well unless they are provided with air. Without air, anaerobic (non-air needing) microbes take over the pile. They do cause slow decomposition, but tend to smell like putrefying garbage!"

I'm afraid your grass pit will fill w/ water and you'll end up w/ a slimmy green yuck.

All said.. it is a nice pit.

Edit: After looking again.. will your FEL fit between the block walls to turn the pile.. w/ the one side open it could work pretty good.

Nice work, great position so you cant see it from the house. Looks like you got the tools too! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Mine is cut into the side of a slope so you dump at the top on ground level and epth at the bottom at ground level.
Are you planning to put organic waste in there too? If so it should compost well on its own with the worms.

Eddie, here in the UK we have B&Q and Homebase, which is the general place to buy DIY and gardening stuff. There are also specialist shops, like TP which sell stuff for the trade, hire equipment ect. Though I dont know I presume it is simalar in Ireland.

Mith,

Any chance of a few pics of your compost heap. Yea all kitchen waste is going in too so hopefully it will work. A relative has done the same job and he mulches any tree cuttings and anything big so that it composts better. the compost he makes is like black gold. B&Q and the likes are all here as well as smaller local diy shops.

Cheers.

Well I wont pretend its as nice as yours but like most of my things it does the job and looks, well, kinda dont exist. Dug it with a digger and made it from pallets and baler twine. The far left bin is ready, the other two are overflowing. Ought to empty the first bin really. Maybe next month.......
