Re: Gravel driveway dust(cat poison)

Roughly, less than2/10 ounce of glycol antifreeze will kill a 9# cat.
If you want exact numbers, www.convert-me.com and a calculator will do it for you.

Mosey,

I have no experience with it to know if it actually works, but supposedly moth balls repel cats.

With regards to using ammonia, my understanding is that it will ATTRACT cats as urine has ammonia in it. Cats will think the area is a giant kitty box and do their business there.

I was going to recommend mothballs, but I see someone has already done that. Also you might try spraying the gravels with driveway sealer, in a pumpup sprayer. That might deter the cats from digging in it, and will dry to a black coating in a couple of days. Back in the old days the counties used to spray their dirt roads with tar to keep the dust down.

Mosey:

Have you considered the products Pet Stores sell to keep cats and dogs off your furniture? I have no idea how much it would take to treat your carport or how often you would have to re-treat it, but the stuff does repel cats, without being harmful to them or your furniture. Just a thought-- /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

I built a better mouse trap with antifreeze, by accident. I had done some work on a vehicle and used a 5 gal pail to catch some dripping fluid (about 1/2" in the bottom of the pail) and left it sit in my garage. Wasn't worried about it since it (the garage) was closed up and nothing could get inside it. The mice go down in to drink and don't come out. I fish them out occasionally and they go into the dumpster on trash day. I wouldn't do this outside though, but it works pretty good in an enclosed area. At least I know where the carcas is, with posion, who knows where they end up.

Thanks for some of the suggestions, but I've already tried moth balls in the flower bed and Tiger just plays with them and Tiny doesn't care about them one way or another. The stuff they sell at pets stores is over $15 for a spray can and it would take at least 5 cans to cover the area.

Has anyone else heard of ammonia attracting cats?

Mosey:

I was thumbing through the Tractor Supply Catalog last night and noticed that they offer a product called "Get Off My Garden" dog and cat repellent. Sells for about $8.00 for a 16 ounce bottle of crystals. Advertising says it is long lasting and works in any weather - which shouldn't be a problem under your carport, anyway.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
