From what I understand the 8166 came with a single cylinder 16 hp Briggs engine. How durable a motor is that and does it run pretty rough being a single cylinder.

Do people avoid those Gravely riders that came with the B&S motors vs saying Kohler or Onan. I'm looking for a used rider and am trying to learn as much as possible about Gravely's.

THanks

I have 2 B&S 16 HP single powered Gravelys. Plus a spare engine. It runs smooth enough to run a 60" deck without any problems. The Onan B43M 16 HP twin is a better engine but new added quite a bit the the cost of the tractor. The Briggs was the cheap solution for the horsepower.

My family has owned five Gravely four wheel tractors through the years and being perfectly honest the Briggs powered one we had gave us the best service of any. Our dealer, who has likely sold as many Gravelys over the years as anyone, said he found them to give great service. Kohler and Onan have been popular Gravely engines and I have had both and like most others think the Onan engine is the ultimate powerplant for a Gravely, but that said it did not provide as good service as our Briggs unit did.
