if it doesn't clear the zerk then we pound out the pin, clean up and reinstall.....
the cleaner works sometimes to save labor.....not always.....
Another though has occurred about using a tool that forces oil through hardened grease: It would seem very likely that if the tool worked as advertised, it might well create a channel/pathway through the hardened grease that would then allow one to force grease into the fitting. All good so far...
What I can see as a potential problem is that this process could well only open up a small passage in the hardened grease, If this were the case, one might think that they were lubricating the whole joint, whereas one might only be only be introducing fresh grease to a small portion of the joint, potentially leading to damage or further damage.
Some fresh grease would of course be better than none, but it would seem that the best solution would be what a professional mechanic would do. To do as you said, and take the whole joint apart, clean and
reassemble.
A good example of "you pay now or you pay more later" in either money or time.
