got a new (to me) branson and several attachments, slightly used. checked the gearboxes today on the bushhog and tiller and they filled with grease. is this normal? never liked the idea of putting grease in a bushhog. could i add 90w to the grease?

I bought a mower used and it had the same issue. I am sure the seals were leaking and that was the quick fix. I have added a little gear oil, but have not removed the grease. I have about 60 hours on it with no problems. I bet yours had leaking seals, so with oil only you will probably need to replace the seals.

Chances are that you are wrong on the leaky seal theory, chances are it is NLGI '000' EP gear lube. Looks like grease, but it is not. Our RFM came with it in the box, many commercial mowers do.

good to know. mine is a used Deere and the dealer said they put cornhead grease in there, but he may be wrong.

I put grease in my Woods MD172 rotary cutter gearbox after the seal failed a third time. I just got tired of messing with it. The grease has been working for around 8 years without any issues. Did the same to the Befco tiller after the 2nd seal gave out after 2 years. I don't know what it was with those two items but they both came from the same dealer and they were the only two implements I had gearbox issues with.
If you have the time I would try replacing the seal but if it fails again then I would fill it with grease and don't look back.
