Na as a Aircraft Mechanic I have been doing that since I was in the USAF 35yrs ago and have been working on airlines for 27yrs. Aircraft Maintenance 101.they go bad because well meaning "lubricators" fail to CLEAN the fitting and gun prior to giving the squeeze.
Oh, and setting out in all weather , having been neglected and dry, doesn't help.
Rust never sleeps!
Those caps are a good thing, I need to get some!
It's the soft brass zerks that gets deformed by our steel tipped grease guns then the check ball doesn't reseat.
But yes you can leave a glob of grease on the nipple that can be wiped off before greasing.
That's the reason auto mfgs no longer put grease zerks on their parts. A lot of people or lube shops just push the dirt and water right into the part destroying it.
