There are grease fittings on my LP RCF2072 cutter but I can't figure out how the heck to get the plastic shield(s) off the driveshaft(s). They "appear" to have plastic clips but I'm afraid to mess w/ them b/c they look like they'll break right off. I'm sure I'm missing something here, they gotta be easy to grease, please help...

Drill a couple holes in the plastic. Worked for me.

The Driveline U-joints fittings are easier to find than the Driveline shield bearings.

I don't mess with the shield locks either because it is sometimes difficult to get them properly relocked.

Most (all?) of the shields have externally accessible plastic grease ports that are easy too grease . They need be greased only occasionally.

The driveline U-joint fittings need be greased only about once per year. I've found it much easier to grease these annually, in the spring when the mower is not mounted on the tractor. The front one can be greased by angling the U-joint appropriately. I remove the drive shaft from the mower gearbox to grease the rear one. You will need to remove the driveshaft annually anyway to slip the slip clutch (if equipped) and grease the tough one that greases the telescoping drive shaft .

Yup, there are small holes you grease up. You don't need a ton of grease either, just a little bit.

I do mine once a year and use good quality grease.

The drive shaft for my Wallenstein chipper has four(4) grease zerks. One on each U-joint and a plastic zerk on each end of the plastic shield - very near the bell on each end.

I also pull my drive shaft apart - once a year - and liberally grease the inner tube.

Then I spend just about as much time wiping the nasty, black grease off all the unnecessary places.

Make sure you also clean and re-grease the telescoping drive line tubes annually...the business ones, not the shield.

On a Walterscheid driveline the shield is very easily disconnected from the yoke. Remove a small sheet metal screw, insert a couple of screwdrivers at the plastic tabs to release them and they pop right off. My BIL had a Walterscheid on his brush cutter for 30 years and never once greased the shield "bearings". They showed no evidence of wear at all.

The lemon shaped telescoping driveline tubing however, the one that he NEVER greased was worn almost all the way through.

youtube has many videos on this subject as well. How to rebuild u-joints and clutches, etc..

When my front U-joint was installed at the factory it was put in backward with the grease zerk facing forward, making it impossible to grease without removing the driveline from the pto shaft. Even after making severe modifications (ie removing) most of the plastic guard it is still a pain. Somebody said they only grease theirs once a year. I do mine probably 10 times per year.

That would apply to me also. Once a year. Never had a problem.
