If you go to marine traffic page, you'll see boats operating in the lower lakes right now. Algoma Central Corporation usually keeps there boats running all winter. If lake ice allows anyway. :confused2: Those crews are tough!

Here is a short drone video of the articulated tug/barge John J. Carrick pushed by the tug Victorious. They get stuck on the St Claire river ice just a few days ago. Breaking ice for them is the Canadian cutter Samuel Risley. There is another US flagged cutter but I'm unsure which boat it is.

Since you guys like them, here is the tug Barbara Andrie busting ice on Lake Muskegon in Michigan February 2021. Seems they are contracted to keep a channel open to the lake. Most tugs have reinforced hulls and can do modest ice breaking.

Here is the Canadian coast guard boat Samuel Risley which is officially a buoy tender, but here he's busy doing ice breaking on the Saint Clair river. Do note, our nations work together to keep the lake commerce going and we do indeed love our brothers to the north.

more info on the Risley
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel Risley joined the Canadian Coast Guard Central and Arctic Region fleet in the fall of 1985. During most of the navigational season, the Samuel Risley operates out of the Canadian Coast Guard base in Parry Sound, Ontario.

Breaking ice on Lake Erie, view from stern The Samuel Risley, named after the first chairman of the Board of Steamship Inspectors, was the first Type 1050 vessel commissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard.

The vessel is highly efficient, as it is equipped with controllable pitch propellers, bow and stern thrusters and twin rudders, all controlled by a microprocessor. The ship can be moved in any direction by a slight adjustment of the joystick steering system. All of its equipment has been designed for quick start-up, making the Risley very effective in search and rescue operations to which, like all Coast Guard vessels, it can be assigned when necessary.

During the navigation season, from late March to late December, the Risley's primary duty is tending aids to navigation in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. This includes placing and removing floating buoys by means of a crane that can handle four motions simultaneously. The ship also has a standard offshore vessel anchor-handling and towing winch. Other aids to navigation duties include servicing radio and radar beacons, and lightstation re-supply and maintenance.

During the winter months, CCGS Samuel Risley breaks ice from Port Colborne, Ontario to Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Risley can move steadily through ice up to 33 inches thick.

Here is the E Speer in Conneaut Ohio this summer to discharge a load of taconite pellets when the receiving hopper malfunctioned, a plan was hatched to transload into 2 Canadian bound Lakers, Atlantic Huron being the first. Good views of the cargo bays on the Atlantic Huron.

Here is a nice video of the EDGAR SPEER while downbound at Port Huron in the St Clair river this past past summer. Trivia question. What is the heater/furnace used for on the rear right corner of the Speer?? Maybe a BBQ?
