Makes sense that for all the damage, sandstorm and wind would be my explanation. I know some people that would say "Black Ice", or Dog ran out in front.

How rarely do we ever get the TRUTH anyway? The higher the level of inquiry, the bigger the lies and coverup.

I haven't heard one word about who the Pilot was, in charge of navigation. Or who was steering the ship. Or much about the power outage or sandstorm.

I have seen many out of control, large ships, smashing into stuff on Youtube, after loosing power.
The AWS track is on the net you can watch it. AWS is standard fare on all civilian commercial ships, military too even though the routinely disable it.

The track clearly shows the right turn into the bank. What caused it is conjecture at this time.

Keep in mind that when traversing the Suez, a Suez qualified pilot is on board. However, he don't have direct control of the helm, he (or she) has to tell the helmsman what he wants them to do. My personal feeling is, he (or she) told the helmsman what to do and the helmsman either misunderstood him or ignored him. Like I said, the AWS track clearly shows the turn to the right....

Will all come out in the inquiry I'm sure. The Ever Given isn't 'out of the woods' yet. She has to pass a detailed marine inspection, not only the propulsion systems but the integrity of the hull as well. If she isn't deemed seaworthy, not sure what they will do. I guess the ALP could tow her to a deepwater port to offload or there may need to be underwater hull repairs and Smit Salvage is equipped to do that. Finally, until she is deemed seaworthy Smit retains ownership of her under International salvage law. That is how that all works.

Kind of curious about the Barker. I thought it had 2 engines and 2 screws but not sure. What I find amazing is the Ever Given is over 310 feet longer and twice as wide as the Barker and draws twice as much draft.

The Ever Given could never sail in the lakes. Maybe Superior but certainly not the lower lakes. Talk about stuck...

Boats run aground in Duluth Harbor seems like one per summer. How the ^%!!@ could that happen when these crews could have been in and out of there, 100's of times. I once asked by buddy who works on da boat why this happens and he said something like "the helmsman and captain, can have miscommunications". Here is the Paul Tregurtha who ran aground right in front Bayfront Festival Park during a performance! Ops!

The collision a couple years ago off the coast of Japan was caused in part by the Navy ship disabling it's AWS system and relying instead on visual sighting.

No, max draft is about 32ft and everything is dredged with that in mind.

I remember that one, was in the Free Press. That tug is blowing smoke too....lol The ALP Defender is 20 times bigger in size and power. Actually, the ALP tug is set up for anchor retrieval, why the stern is almost at the waterline and open

So the AWS log can tell what the steering gear of he ship is doing? Or just WHERE the ship went. Could it not have been a turn, but wind? For a ship that size, with only a rudder on the back for direction control, that is a HUGE surface area for wind.

Those steering wheels on the modern ships are WAY too small. Like in an Austin Mini. They need to go back to the BIG wheels with the spokes and handles, and maybe this kind of stuff will stop.

Worthless factoid about tugs. They are built with whats called a negative draft hull design so the harder they push, the deeper they get into the water so as to push harder yet. Not built for speed. :ROFLMAO:
