Great lake boats, a good video

Here is 2 tugs in the Goderich Harbour Canada turning the Algo Lake around while in ice. My buddy who worked on the lakes said that thrusters get plugged with ice and don't help much, so captains will call in tugs in those conditions.

Something I'm curious about. Many of the lakes boats now exhaust what looks like steam from their funnels. I presume they are T 4 compliant and are exhausting vapor from the mixing of diesel exhaust fluid in the exhaust instead of black smoke from non compliant diesel engines. Is that correct? the Coast Guard ice breakers and the tugs in the above post are exhausting black smoke but the big ships, the exhaust looks to be white and not black like a non compliant diesel exhausts.

I just counted 20 boats under power in this lake looking at Marin Traffic site. About 10 boats are still at anchor in the whitefish bay area.

Yes, they have scrubbers that use water and creates the steam you see. Don't ask me anything more about them.

I was thinking if they were using DEF and Selective Catalytic Reduction, that would be a huge amount of DEF and no SCR units visible.

Here is the algo lake when he dumped salt off for us 10+ years ago. In the top photo, he's in reverse. They back up the canal the few miles from the north entry.

The Mark Barker was again moved at the Sturgeon Bay ship yard. If anyone can tell us why front unloading conveyors have come back into vogue, pleae tell us.
