$600 doesn't sound bad to me for 12 hours of hard, hot work. I'd say "Pay the man!"
I had a motor mount on a 60hp electric motor break and a local guy rewelded it for me, it's held for over 2 years now. He didn't pre-heat, but he only welded a bit, then he would peen it with a zip gun pretty hard before he went to the next fillet.
